Does anyone know of a mutilple external drive enclosure that is not scsi, i would like to have 2 or 3, 300 gb HD to attach to my system with either usb or firewire or even networked, but all i can find are single unit external enclosures, i know they are cheap, but i would prefer to be neat, and only have one unit, with the ability to hold 3 or 4 drives, i have looked around and cannot find any. any help or pointers in the right direction would be appreciated thanks :)
 
Although USB and FireWire are both extremely convenient interfaces for external hard drives, they are also extremely limited. Both are capped at transfer rates of around 40MB/sec, meaning that it really isn't possible to effectively utilize more than one drive on either of those busses.

e(xternal)SATA is by far the best way to do this. A sinlge SATA cable offers at a minimum 150MB/sec of throughput, and can go as high as 300MB/sec. In addition, eSATA doesn't require any bridging between USB/1394 and ATA. SATA enclosure are expensive, as they don't have the mass market appeal of USB/1394 enclosure, but they are the way to go when you want more than one external drive. The benefits justify the added cost, at least in my judgment.
 
ok, eSATA sounds alright, who carries Multiple drive external enclosures? I dont want to buy a spare PC, but if it comes down to it, i will just add some drives to what is soon to be my former machine, and network that, but i would prefer an external enc. that i can move around.
