I recently setup my C2D E6570 and GTX260 with both the newest SMP2 client and the CPU client. I was wondering, should I cap my SMP2 client @ like 90% to prevent it from slowing down the GPU client or should I run the SMP2 client @ 100%? I recently got back into folding after a 7 month hiatus and i am just trying to get the most outta my machines.

Additionally, I had recently asked about running SMP2 on some dual xeon boxes and I ended up switching to ESXi (from Hyper-V which doesn't let you have more then 4 virtual CPUs) for these 2 boxes. I was wondering which is best for -bigadv... using one of the prefab VM (evga or notfred I think) or creating my own linux VM and setting up F@H on it myself? thanks!

Also, one of my boxes has 8 real cores, each with HT (16 threads), should I run -bigadv x2 or one -bigadv and one SMP2? or something else entirely? thanks!

That depends how well versed you are with Linux. Unless you are very competent with Linux and can custom design a distro to your own specs, I'd just DL and install one of the ready-made images like the EVGA edition. It is so quick and simple to run it and the performance is good. You can't go wrong IMO.

One -bigadv if running native Linux, and the least number of -biagadv clients that your VM application will permit based on core number support. If you can run one client with support for 16 cores, then that would be the best performance obtainable with dual 5500 Xeons.
 
the dual x5550 machine is running ESXi which limits me to 8 cores for one VM. There isn't a way to change that is there? run 16 threads (16 vCPUs) on one VM with ESXi 4.0?

Not that I'm aware of, unfortunately. Even with the newest version of Player, we are apparently limited to 4 core support and that can't be changed either. What I would do if I were you is try running two clients (dual VMs) using the EVGA image with 8 cores each, and then try a single VM by turning HT off. See which setup gets you the best production.
 
OOC, how high a frequency will your X5500 machine attain with turbo mode?
 
I think running VMs with the A3 will probably be the best. Running 2 -bigadv will kill a rig with all the info that has to get pushed around.

The Xeon X5500 series will turbo +266mhz @ 100% load (X5550, X5560, X5570)
Turbo Mode is setup as 3/3/2/2 - 1 cores load / 2 core load / 3 core load / 4 cores load

So the X5550 will run at 2.93Ghz With Turbo Mode ( C0/C1 &D0 revisions )

On the ESXi system, I would run the SMP2 A3 cores on each set of 4 processors.
On the 16 thread system, run the native SMP2 A3 client for that system.

No. If you can run it then -bigadv is always better than SMP2. The only reason to run SMP2 for a 16-thread box is if you don't want to run Linux natively on the system; VMware doesn't support more than 8 threads per instance at the moment.
