Hi guys, I am in the process of putting together plans for a case that I want to build. I'm more in the brain storming idea and I was hoping that some of you case modding freakings could help me out. I say that as a good thing of course. Anyways, I'm want to build much more than a case, but more a computer cluster box of some kind.
Basically the reason for this is that I have way to many computers and my room is way to hot, plus I want something that is more so a rack type setup. I have a lot of ideas in my head but I'm sure most of it will come out as the discussion goes on.
Here is a VERY VERY VERY * 1000 basic idea what my beginning thoughts of a case. I plan on learning a bit about SolidWorks and doing it in that program.
Purpose behind case:
I live in a 2 bedroom apartment and my room is always hotter than the rest of the house. I want to build this case partly to reduce the heat in my house by having the case take air from the room and pump it through the case and out a dry hose type vent that is secured in the window. I'm not sure how this will work or what kind of fans I will need but I want to put some kind of HEPA filter in front of the fans so that I can just go to home depot to replace it and not need to clean the fans every 10 days because of dust. I think a HEPA filter would reduce airflow considerably so i may need more powerful fans.
I also want to do this case to consolidate my computers. I have a total of 4 computers right now, 2 of which are servers, 1 main desktop, and 1 old dell optiplex desktop router. The machines fit under a table from ikea but are not very uniform. I want to try and make this new case as clean and stylish as possible.
The last considerations for this case are accessibility. I'm in a wheelchair and its VERY much a pain in the neck to get to my hardware. I am constantly moving this or changing that and it would be nice to have the case setup so that I could simply pull a drawer out and there is my computer.
My idea is that the computer will consist of 4 drawer like shelves that will house a computer each. All the computer components will be exposed without a case. I had originally thought a box to put my cases in that could ventilate a bit better, but I've since tossed that idea because I want to have access to my boards so taht I can put ram in here or take this harddrive off here, etc. The mobo's will be screwed to the drawers and the cards will need some kind of support like those tech bench setups that SVC.com sells. I'm not sure if the power supplies will be all in one corner of the case or if i will mount them on the shelves as in the picture. I want everything to be as modular as possible making it easy to move things around. I plan on checking out all the case mods that have been done so far. I realize this project is going to take a good amount of money and a lot of time. Being disabled, its going to cost even more since I'll need to pay someone to do most of the work, especially stuff I dont even have access too such as a CNC or welder.
The reason i am posting is more so for a personal journal and hopes that some people might be able to point me in the right direction in finding people to do CNC, welding, etc. I also wanted to get peoples feedback and input as to what they think will work and how things have worked for them in the past. Another idea I had was to incorporate some kind of breakout box for the video, keyboard, mouse, etc. I wanted to have all the cables inside the case to be on some kind of a pully style thing, or even sometime as simple as all zip tied up and hanging from a stretchy cord... such is an air host at a nice autobody shop.
