MST Resolution Scaling

As of current drivers on an R9 290X using a 2160p MST monitor, I notice there are only two resolutions available to select in games, 640x480 or 3840x2160.

This fixes one long-standing issue with recent drivers (14.4 I think) whereby opening anything at a resolution other than 3840x2160 [such as the one a game might pick when being launched for the first time] used to disable the displayport output until you rebooted the PC.
However, of course for graphical demand purposes it'd be nice to be able to select some intermediate resolutions for the odd title where lowering detail to 'medium' isn't enough. Is there any way of doing this with current drivers? I'm pretty sure thinking back to the days of the scaler-less 30" monitors (e.g. 3007WFP) even though the monitor didn't support intermediate resolutions you could still use them and let the graphics card do the rest. Does this functionality not work in eyefinity these days?
