hey all, just finishing up a build with an x58 pro-e and antec p183. before closing everything up, i decided to plug in the power and see if everything would start up and fortunately, it started up!

for some reason, however, the machine doesnt power off immediately when i press the button. it only powers down immediately after 10 seconds or so of running. holding down the power button works consistently though.

my understanding is that if youre just in bootmode or command prompt (not in windows or anything), the power button response should be on/off instantly. are there startup processes for the first 10-15 seconds that prevent immediate shutdown? power button powers on instantly, consistently every time, just not the other way around.

No. Hasn't worked that way for years -- any even vaguely modern BIOS has a delay built in so you don't accidentally turn the thing off in the middle of a drive operation.

There may be a BIOS option you can set to remove the delay, but I wouldn't recommend it. There is absolutely nothing wrong with your board, at least so far as that goes.

so regardless of whether or not im in windows or just at the boot screen, the bios has a built-in delay which prevents immediate shutdown when the power button is pressed?

Yes. If you're in Windows it obviously just sends the "shut down" signal to Windows and does a graceful shutdown if you press and release the button. If you press and hold the button in Windows it will do a hard shutdown, which may result in hard drive corruption but is your best option if you hard-lock. It'll do the same thing if you hold the button in the BIOS itself. Some BIOSes will do a hard shutdown in the BIOS after a delay if you press and release, some will not. Behavior varies.
