MSI solves Nvidia GTX 200 squealing problem

Interesting, took 'em a while though, it seems like we see less and less non-reference designs these days.

Cool! Maybe this will start happening with all of NVIDIA's high-end cards.

Didn't even know that there was a problem like this. Something similar have only appeared on certain mobos I've used.

I didnt actually experience this with a 280 but I had a 8800GTS 640mb that gave me a headache when I overclocked it! And i've got a Dell M1330 which makes noises too. I think its just an issue with every piece of electronics tbh ....

It is, but it seemed like the GTX 260 were particularly prone to it (though isn't noticeable unless the side panel is off and I'm looking for it), or GTX 260 users were particularly prone to notice and complain about it... :p Some of the GTX 260 that did it really were rather loud and high-pitched though... It's not always as pronounced on other parts/electronics.

My EVGA GTX280 doesn't squeal. It's hooked to a Corsair HX620 PSU.
I would put money on it that it does. you may not hear it or notice it over your other components but the gtx cards likely all squeal to some degree. its hardly noticeable on my gtx260 and it usually only happens on all the intro screens before I start a game.

yeah I have heard certain mobos do it too. I returned an HP pc that something on the mobo would whine and squeal just surfing the net. the one I exchanged for did it too but it was not noticeable unless I opened the case and listened for it.

I have two GTX260's, both of which are refurbs (which I would assume are probably more likely to squeal, as they aren't the highest quality) and I've never heard either of them squeal.

That said, I did have an 8800gtx that squealed before, but a bios update made it go away.

I had the squealing issue too with a Corsair VX550 and 8800 GTS 320 until I removed and reinstalled the card. It's all silent now. Weird.

Good to see that the issue is being solved, though :)

Interesting, I had zero idea this was ever an issue...

Corsaid PSU and 4870's here, never an issue and Vsync was never turned on.

Damn. Both of mine squeal. Too bad. I kinda learned to live with it after a while, although it is pretty annoying even so.

I have very good hearing and my other components make no noise. I even ran the burn in test in Furmark and it jumped my GPU's temp to 86C with 100% fan and i still never heard it.

I hear different "squeals" on this 9800GT (custom cooling solution by MSI no less) depending on whether it's doing active 3D rendering or playing back pre-rendered 3D movies/cutscenes. Not loud enough to bug me, but it's definitely there.

From my experience it really just happens when I've *very* high fps, in the 300-400++ area.

well at 100% fan speed nobody could hear the squealing :p. the gtx200 fans are insanely loud about 70-80% but luckily they never go above 40% which is also the idle fan speed. in other words my fans have never had to spin up on their own and my temps only get into the high 60s to low 70s during gaming.

I game at 1440x900 actually ;) Had some spare cash left over in my paypal account, so figured I could replace my 8800gt.

youre not going to come close to using all that gtx260 at 1440 with that cpu. you will get no better performance in most games than you would with a gts250. heck I bet you wont even get 2-3 more fps in games like Far Cry 2 than you do with your 8800gt.

Isn't the GTS250 pretty much the g92? I plan on upgrading to i7 soon, but had an itchy trigger finger for the GTX260. I'm sure I'll get plenty of improvements over my 8800gt when it comes to AA and what not.

yes its a g92 with 16 more shaders and faster clocks than an 8800gt. 1440x900 is a very cpu bound res and your cpu at 2.6 is easily slower than mine at 2.4. at 1440x900 if I lower mine to 2.4 Far Cry 2 sits at the same framerate as it does at 1920x1080. overclocking the card does ZERO at that res for games like Far Cry 2. in fact if I underclock my card with those settings the framerate stays the same. your next priority needs to be a modern size monitor and then a platform upgrade.

I'm pretty content with my setup. I've got a multimonitor setup that I'm fond of at 2880x900 and I don't really see the need to change it anytime soon. The only thing I'm really interested in is upgrading my CPU and hopping on the i7 wagon.

well at just 1440x900 you will see a bigger jump in many games when you get that i7 then you did going from an 8800gt to gtx260. ;)
