Ryan and the crew at PC Perspective have thrown a little review action on the MSI R6970 Lightning. Overall, it seems like they really liked the card. You can see our review here for comparison purposes.

"It is a tremendous design from MSI, and I am happy to say that they have erased the memory of the disappointing R5870 of yesteryear. It does have a price premium over a standard HD 6970, but in this case I think the premium is well worth it. It has a good overclock right out of the box, and the Twin Frozr III cooler is a marvel. Even though it does not exhaust the air outside of the case, it was so effective in cooling the chip that it barely raised the case temperature in the first place."

The link loops back to this same thread. Fix please :D

I'm getting excited about buying two of these. i think it's a beautiful card and the idea of it being practically silent is very exciting too for someone like me.

I think the second law of thermodynamics disagrees. Dissipating heat doesn't prevent it from being generated.

QFT, although he must have had a good case so he didn't notice a good spike in case temp.

Huh? Really. WTF exactly was so disappointing with the 5870, as I seem to recall it being king of the hill for quite a while.

I don't think they're talking about Cypress as a whole, but MSI's 5870 Lightning design which was pretty over priced while not offering much over the reference design in clock overhead.
