I have an MSI R6950 Power Edition vid card.

After about a year, the fans seized up, an overheated the card, thus shutting down my system. The fans are non-servicable, as they use a bushing for the fans instead of ball bearings. They got gummed up an stopped spinning.

I bought a Gelid Icy aftermarket cooler because I couldn't afford a new vid card at that point, an quickly found out that it would not fit a non-reference card. The heat pipes would lay on top of some capacitors, an thus the cooler would not sit flush on the cards' chipset.

Thinking I would have to get a new video card anyway, I didn't worry about trying some things to free up the fans on the stock cooler if I broke it. Without cooling an with very limited funds, I got desperate.

I had some Liquid Wrench spray laying around from my shop. It's a super-solevent. Spraying some into the fans an working it in for about half an hour, the fans are spinning VERY freely, just as the day I got the video card new.

Problem an question is....Liquid Wrench, as most solevents, is FLAME-ABLE. I don't want to reassemble the unit an have it catch fire, obviously. Will Liquid Wrench evaporate safely? Will there be flame-able residue even after it has dried for a few days, even blasting it with compressed air? I'm quite nervouse at this point, as I might have saved myself a bunch of money I don't have on a new video card at this point, but I don't want to set the house on fire either. lol

Thoughts? Suggestions?
 
Once dry it should be fine. It's a basically very low viscosity oil which allows it to flow and get in between the threads of rusted bolts, etc. Blast it with some air to get it to evaporate off as much as possible and you should be fine. It's also used to displace water from spark plug connections in automotive ignition systems. It can't be highly volatile.
 
Hey, thanks for the quick reply, Relayer. I made sure to dry it out well, an put a drop of super-slick banana oil that I use for the bearings in my RCs. Plugged the fans to the PSU to test (an to further dry the solvent, if there was any in there yet), an they're spinning fast an cold. Time to tear down the computer to reinstall now. PITA, as I have a SFF case an have to pretty much dismantle the entire computer just to get at the GPU.

Anyway, this is why I come to these forums, an glad to be a member. Helpful ppl!
