I don't see any threads dedicated to this nice board.
I've built a great system around it dual booting windows xp pro and debian. I love the huge number of sata and usb sockets on the ICH8R southbridge.
And that "d-bracket" with the extra usb ports and the 4 red/green LEDs to indicate each step of boot process has been quite useful in my overclocking endeavours.
The overclock failure automatic recovery process also worked nicely, except for one time that my settings weren't useable by the RAM (4 leds were 3 red and top right green indicating ram problem) and I had to resort to shorting the clear cmos jumper and removing the battery for a bit when that didn't work.
I've made it to 375Mhz so far. Once I find the best i can do, I plan to experiment with the Dynamic Overclocking settings. I love the idea of having it run very quiet when not in use or lightly loaded.
I did have a bit of a problem installing debian at first because this board can only use the PATA IDE bus with DVD drive on it through the jmicron controller for which support was only added to recent linux kernels which haven't been included on recent linux distro installers.
But I was able to use the debian etch installer nightly build from yesterday, 2007-01-16, and install with no problems and no special kernel boot options required.
I also found it a bit odd that the board has 4 fan connectors, but only 3 of them are shown in the bios. And using MSI's "dual core center" software only lets you control the fan speed of the cpu and northbridge for some reason. (and the MSI software crashed a couple times). I was thinking of hooking my front or back 120mm fan to the northbridge fan plug so I can control it dynamically.
Or do you guys think it's best to use the automatic fan speed controls in the bios?
Has anyone had any luck with the various softare packages for analysing/controlling this motherboard from software?
fanspeed in windows doesn't recognize it, and lm-sensors in linux didn't seem to work - although I only spent a minutes installing, sensors-detect and loading the lm92 kernel module it recommended.
