I am considering picking up this Laptop for work, school, and mobile gaming for those random lan parties.

I would like opinions on the $1400+Tax Sticker price, as well as advice on cheaper alternatives. I am open to different manufacturers, but I really like MSI's products.

Here is a http://www.bestbuy.com/site/msi-gt70-dominator-895-17-3-laptop-intel-core-i7-8gb-memory-1tb-hard-drive-aluminum-black/5142092.p?id=1219111591490&skuId=5142092&ref=06&loc=01&ci_src=14110944&ci_sku=5142092&extensionType=pla:g&s_kwcid=PTC!pla!!!37678873159!g!!49989913399&kpid=5142092&k_clickid=202d8261-5f88-1008-d395-00001db06d8c

Specs:
i7 2.7GHz
17.3" screen
8G memory
NVIDIA GeForce GTX 870M

Thanks in advance for your advice.

Azure.

That's a reasonable price for that config. The only other model/manufacturer that would give you the same or better performance around that price is Sager/Clevo (82xx/p15xx models). In general, you'll get better cooling with the Sager, but MSI has a superior keyboard (which may be better if you're going to be typing a lot for school or work). The chassis are about the same size although you may prefer the design of one or the other.

The only other mobile GPU in that price range is the m290x which is slightly better than the 870m at high resolution/IQ (but stay away from the "Destroyer" version with the m290x as that AMD CPU will cripple you). You may also be able to find a used laptop with a 780m for cheaper which would be noticeably better than the 870m.

I would, however, highly recommend looking at a 15" model (GT60, NP8235) if you're going to be carrying it around. It doesn't seem like the extra weight and volume of the 17" models would matter, but believe me, they do after schleping it a while. Also, you should try to look at one of these laptops in real life if you haven't as they are bigger/thicker than pictures normally show.

I got the same machime carouselambra posted. Paid 1200 for it last January. Can't say a single bad thing about it. I moved the 750gb drive into the second bay and picked up a Samsung 250gb pro for the system. I also flashed the clevo 670mx firmware to the video card so I could overclock it a bit. I'm waiting for the prices to come down on the 780M so I could pick one of those up.

Get it, you won't regret it.

I have a GT60 (have had two GT60s -> upgraded)... What harmattan says about keyboard is very true. It seems trivial but I wouldn't switch to another notebook without the steelseries keyboard if I had to replace. build quality is great and so is performance :) . If that one has superraid I would definitely upgrade to 3 ssds - worth it soo much.

Eh 3 SSD's while nice, IMHO is not worth it. One good SSD like a Samsung Pro is more than enough for 99% of use cases.

Just finished up a MSI GX60 upgrade for a friend. Very nice laptop. Similar to the one you're looking at. Upgrades that he needed were an SSD and Wireless N network card.
These laptops also have the capability of accepting a dual mSATA card. Which allows you to run two mSATA SSD cards (hard drives) in RAID 0 for crazy amounts of speed.

I would definitely say it was worth it - though people need to keep info backed up when they use a raid 0 array so if you want insane speed for your storage then this is the way to go.

Its remarkable how spoiled the steelseries keyboard makes you to other notebook keyboards.

The GT70 is a solid machine, be aware the next revision will get IPS screens and the new generation GPUs but is likely a few months away yet.

The GT60 is already using an IPS display.

Yeah I find it weird that now I am so smitten with something as simple as the keyboard, but it is hard to describe how big of a difference that really is. When someone sees my notebook I always have them try the keyboard and needless to say that they always like it more than their current notebook's kb.

The key depression has just the right feel and travel, it really is a selling point that goes under looked.

Surprising given that is one of two(except screen) ways the user interfaces with the machine, its a pretty important factor IMHO. I remember back in the day I exclusively bought and recommended IBM. Despite being awesome machines in many other respects they had the best keyboards hands down. This is the first machine that had a keyboard that was as good and in some ways better than the IBMs I was used to.

Yeah, I have become so accustomed to this keyboard that I enjoy typing on it more than my MSI GK-601 keyboard with Cherry Red switches... I am also a bit faster on the notebook.

I'm looking forward to the GT72.

17.3" dual fan design with IPS display (optimus switching? But at least external outputs optimus free), PCI express based M.2 storage and increased PSU size. Still with dynaudio speakers and steelseries keyboard.

If you can turn optimus off and overclock the internal panel I will have no choice.
