I don't know if this has been posted before, or when this came out (yet), but there's apparently a class action suit regarding MSI boards (& bad caps). Did a search and didn't come up with anything recent/remotely close//

The Class Representative alleges in this Action that MSI Computer Corp. ("MSI") sold motherboards with allegedly defective capacitors (as defined in the Settlement Class). MSI has denied and continues to deny these allegations and has asserted a number of affirmative defenses.

You are a member of the proposed Settlement class (the "Class"), if you are within the United States and you purchased during the period 1999 through the present, at wholesale or retail, a MSI Motherboard manufactured between 1999 and May 2002 inclusive as determined by manufacture date codes on the motherboard for your own use and not for resale. The Class does not include motherboards purchased as original equipment components of computers or computer systems manufactured by Dell, LG, Gateway, Samsung or IBM. It wasn't just MSI in the spotlight at that time and MSI have used nothing but good quality Japanese made capacitors for a long time since this issue.

Was an industry wide issue and while people could point the finger at the board manufacturer they should also consider shoving some of the blame onto the actual capacitor manfacturer and component suppliers.

There's actually a cool story behind it -

This is a pretty old issue.

If you enjoy stories of conspiracies, theft and manufacturer mayhem search google for "Bad Capacitors".

Nearly every single PC manufacturer was affected by this.
