MSI 6950 unlocked, weird problems

First I would like to say that before any ulocking I was able to hi 940core, did not push the memory yet.

I just unlocked my 6950 to a 6970. Now i can't get 920 oc without GPUTool stability test giving me errors. Before it was running at about 280fps, now it runs at about 17.5fps, and is artifacting. I benched before the unlock and after. While running the original bios at the 940 core I got better performance so at this point I have reverted back the original card.
BTW i was running the 940 at 1.150volts.

Any thought why this would happen.

Also now that I have gone back to my original bios it is still doing the artifacts with using the stability bench in GTUTool, and it is getting 17 fps. :confused:
 
Never mind guys, I was being empty headed when I reinstalled the drivers after the flash, I reloaded the ati generic drivers. Now that I have installed the up to date drivers off the msi website everything is back to normal. :D
 
So how are things going so far? You've just unlocked the shaders and boosted the core clock, leaving the memory speeds alone? That's what I've seen to be the best. The memory OC is what is known to burn out the card. Is it a good performance boost from the stock to the unlocked/OC'ed?
 
Think we had a thread which showed anything from 2-8% increase in performance clock for clock, depending on the game, resolution and such. Usually 2-3% though.

Correct, I have not really touched the memory, I have brought it up to 1300 now, fully stable, but the risk to reward ratio for the memory oc is not not good enough for me. So I'm happy with it now I have it stable at 950\1300, with full shaders so I got a lot more card then I paid for.

"Technically" havent you overclocked the memory? It's at 1250 stock and you have it at 1300 no? Is that just the minimum you have to have it in order to have the core clock at 950?
 
Nice OC. My card needs exactly 1.2v (no less) to hit 920. You did 940 at 1.15v. Sweet!
 
Yes, true technically I did overclock the memory, just not to the extent that I would in the past. I could get the core voltage to the 940 w/o any memory oc.

Update: Have it stable at 1175v, 950core, 1300mem. I have not tried to push it to much further since I just got the card, but I would like to know how far anyone else out there has pushed there vcore. The card runs really cool, it hasn't hit over 65c on full load, ambient temp of 27ish, and case temp of 29. Still don't really want to touch the mem to much, I have read that a lot of people are very weary of these chips.
 
Nice clock ;)... how is your fan profile setup? 65C at load is pretty good temp. BTW.. what did you use to bump up the voltage?

You could have damaged the vram, as stock is Hynix H5GQ2H24MFR T2C GDDR5 5000 @ 5000mhz spec IC's for the 6950, and Hynix H5GQ2H24MFR R0C GDDR5 6000 @ 5500mhz spec for 6970, they are physically different Hynix chips . So by loading a 6970 bios, you are already at 'default' runing that ram a fair bit higher then intended spec, and if overclocking, further pushing it beyond spec. Most on a 6970 should have memory clocks that go quite a bit higher as it is already running under binned spec for the ICs at stock speeds.

They were sold as lower priced 6950's for a reason, and unlocking disabled shaders doesn't automaticaly make them physically identical to a true 6970 card because there are hardware differences, like the ram.
