Microsoft has released Microsoft Security Essentials 2.0.

Download

From what I see, it's not available on WU or via built in MSE Upgrade, you must download from the site, at least for now.

Improvements:
  • Windows Firewall integration – During setup, Microsoft Security Essentials will now ask if you would like to turn the Windows Firewall on or off.
  • Enhanced protection for web-based threats – Microsoft Security Essentials now integrates with Internet Explorer to provide protection against web-based threats.
  • New protection engine – The updated anti-malware engine offers enhanced detection and cleanup capabilities with better performance.
  • Network inspection system – Protection against network-based exploits is now built in to Microsoft Security Essentials.
  • Option to limit CPU usage during system scan

If you're part of the MSE 2.0 beta (I am, many others are) we'll get it automagically in the next few days as basically an upgrade to our current v2.x builds, but for new customers, the more the merrier I suppose. ;)

Easiest way to tell which you have is the original 1.x builds have the bluish-green backgrounds in the window; the 2.x builds use the newer grey backgrounds. This is what the info looks like for the current MSE 2.x beta builds:

No, the beta period is finished - it's now officially a "final" product, aka RTM, Gold, whatever you want to call it. Version 2.0 is what this thread is about, it's available as of yesterday at:

http://www.microsoft.com/security_essentials

as noted in the first post in this thread. No more beta, just the finished product.

Thanks for the heads-up on the new version. Just installed MSE 2.0 on one of my machines. Install went through smoothly, and it upgraded my existing MSE installation from the 1.0 without first requiring an uninstall.

I just did a reformat the other day and installed this. I noticed the new background and such, but didn't even realize it was v 2.0. Looks good though, seems to be working fine.

Can I install MSE 2.0 along with my Norton Antivirus? Will it cause any conflict?
I am running Windows XP.

You never could and never will be able to get it using Windows Update... at least to my understanding.

I can wait to get it on my systems

Running multiple antivirus programs may cause conflicts and may bog your system down, and should not be done. Run only one.

You can have Malwarebyte's Anti-Malware installed with any AV software; it's a good idea to run it now and then to see if your AV has missed anything.

Can somebody verify each version of MSE 2.0? thanks

XP 32bit - 7,683KB
Vista-7 32bit - ?,???KB
Vista-7 64bit - 9,688KB

OK, I guess that I will stick with Norton for now, since that I have already paid for it.

Thanks for the advice on Malwarebyte. I am doing a scan now...

I have the original version and I am wondering if I should upgrade. Is there any difference in performance between the new one and the old one?

You should upgrade to the new one, for many of the same reasons you should upgrade to the latest newspapers when they arrive.

thanks so theres no difference between XP 32 bit and vista-7 32bit... I was going crazy thinking I was downloading the wrong version

Doesn't seem to be any difference, no, and as for why Microsoft lists them separately is beyond me - they could just list it as two links: one for XP/Vista/Windows 7 32 bit and then Vista/Windows 7 x64.

But that would make sense, hence it not being done that way. :D
