I currently have a 840 Pro as my boot drive and would like to take advantage of the msata slot on my z77z up4. I can get a new Sandisk 128gb msata for 60 bucks from a friend. The speed is slower than my ssd. Is there any advantage to add the msata and will my ssd only be as fast as the weakest link ?

msata ports are generally only intended for folks that run "traditional" spinning HDD's. Be it as a cache area with Intel's caching tech or as just a bootable drive.

Apparently the mSATA port is shared with one of the Intel SATA2 ports, so there is no point to it really.

As others have said, there is literally no benefit of doing that.

Using an mSATA SSD to cache an SSD? What would the point be? MAYBE if the mSATA SSD was significantly faster, and the primary SSD was several generations old, it might have made a benefit, but you're using a Samsung 840 Pro. That's already a damn fast SSD.

You could save the mSATA SSD for some other build/laptop in the future, as $60 isn't a bad price for it, but you wouldn't see any benefits using it now.

One thing you COULD do, if you just wanted more storage, is use the mSATA SSD as your boot drive, and the 840 Pro as a secondary storage drive, but that's hardly a ton of extra space, and would also result in performance slowdown compared to just the 840 Pro by itself.
