Hey guys,

I just finished a month's worth of RMAing to find out that the Aria system I was building had a bad processor. Last night I installed a replacement, and here I sit typing on it now. I thought everything was just fine, but it turns out someone must hate me...

Over the last three or four hours I've gone away from the machine to find it had rebooted and was waiting on the windows PW screen. I log in, and I get the microsoft "serious error" reporter which takes me to a page that says my CPU was reporting a hardware failure!!! Bah, The fool thing is brand new, and has survived installing windows, a few minutes of WoW, and 3dmark05 without hiccupping. I should note that I didn't leave the comp alone doing anything strenuous, just idling with trillian and a firefox window or two.

The damn thing ran all night last night without incident; I really hope nothing is going to die. Any advice?

CPUs either work or dont work, they dont limp around like hdds can. Its 99% most likely your PSU cause the stock antec non-truepower (smartpower they're called) are pretty shit and cant handle new processors.

Go out and but a truepower 480 or a neopower and i bet it'll all be good. If that doesnt work, stop believing windows cause its a stupid stupid program.

I am using the stock Antec PSU - which is the one the Aria comes with. It is a non-standard form factor mATX like PSU.

The last CPU actually went dead - belly up no boot. This one does seem alive. Maybe I shouldn't listen to microsoft, but after all this waiting I'm overly cautious. My current cpu is a 2.8 520, cooled with a Zalman 7000CU. It idles at 30something, and loads up around 45 or os.

The problems, oddly, don't seem to be any worse when playing games, as I've done so for the last 40 minutes

What parts have you RMA'd?

You can limit the bad parts to:
motherboard, RAM, PSU

And how exactly does your CPU report a "hardware failure"? Can you provide screenshots or a better description?

I have RMA'ed the motherboard and gotten another processor. The RAM Passes Memtest, and was used in my tower system for a year or two. This proc definately seems to be working better than the previous one.

I'll copy a link to the MS error report page: http://oca.microsoft.com/en/response.aspx?SGD=bf247a8d-7d3c-4422-9044-4725be88c01b&SID=571

EDIT: woke up this morning after leaving the thing run overnight, i was back at PW screen again. Booted in, got same message.

I'm fairly sure its the power supply, although the one you have is decent.

Power supply? Is there an easy way I can test this? I'm not sure why it would be the PS, considering it doesn't frack up during bootup or anything like that. In fact, it seems to only happen when I'm away from the PC not doing anything.
