Mr. Stryker took a risk to remove the heat spreader on his s754 3000+ clawhammer. After that, he started to clean the core and applied AS5 on it then put the cpu on his mobo and properly seated the heatsink. Now, he thought everything is in order and booted his puter. Bam his puter turned off 2 sec later, and he thought he should remove the heatsink so he unplugged everything includin the psu. Omfgbbqhax the heatsink never touched the cpu core. wat can he do and how can he resolve that problem?

that's an xp-90 or xp-120 mounting bracket i see, no? on the bottom, there are 6 little stubs that hold it off the mobo surface.. he should sand them down on a flat surface a bit less than 1/2 way.

can you ask him to take a picture of the underside of that bracket?
 
no he's using regular msi bracket and k8 silent boost heatsink with 80 mm tornado on it.
 
wait, it isn't dead? I'd think it would be toast, but I guess thermal protection might have saved it.

ah, i have no idea how to mod that to fit.. there's a bar of sorts that clips into the retension bracket and holds down the heatsink, no?
 
I was thinkin that he should put his puter flat down, remove the bracket, and leave the heatsink on top of the cpu with no hold on it. It should work that way. Btw he's kinda of paranoid that his puter might not be workin @ all. :rolleyes:

that won't work. nowhere near enough force. just have him look at it carefull to see if there's any way to tighten up the heatsink a bit.
 
(>.<) ... all cpu must have heatsink to press down against the core in order to get it workin correctly?

we will find a way to stick that heatsink onto the mobo.
 
yeah, well to get good thermal transfer.. it's gotta be tighter than just resting on it. just have a look at things.. i do recall one of you two telling me that you wanted to go into engineering ;) :p

in the meantime, i'l dig around for pitcures to see if i can come up with a good and simple way to fix this problem

it has a bar! either stick something about 2-3mm thick that won't break inbetween the bar and where it holds the heatsink down in the middle, or attempt to bend it to tighten the force. i would try the first.. first, as it's easy to undo if it doesn't work.

The problem is that there's a plastic barrier which is holdin the k8 heatsink away from the cpu. Mr. Stryker might have to cut both sides a little in order to push down the k8 directly to the cpu. We'll see.

that's the underside of the black bracket. those standoffs need to be sanded down ~2mm, which is about 1/2 way. make sure they're all even though.. sanding it on a big sheet of 400 grit sandpaper similar to lapping a heatsink should work well, just make sure you don't go too far.
 
Kinda sorta random. I remember back in the days of the good old AXIA core thunderbird someone tried to cool their TBird with stacks of pennies.

Edit: he's using 100 grit sandpaper.

Update: Stryker successfully lapped MSI bracket's stub. The cpu core has full contact to the heatsink. Tomorrow he will be lappin his K8 heatsink with 1000 and 2000 grit sandpaper. Eclipse thx for ur help. :D
 
and be absolutely certain that you get no AS5 on those little chips around the core.. or break them :p
 
Today I'm going to Lowes or Home Depot to pick up 1k and 2k grit sandpaper, to sand my current heatsink. I will post pictures later so you two can enjoy to see yourself in the copper's mirror.

U get a gold star! ;) I am surprised... As I speak to bigdaddy today, I asked him why don't u try adding the Arcticsilver 5 on the cpu and another arcticsilver 5 on the heatspreader... will it work?! He say no, but he would like u to try ur idea... so let me see what gonna happen to ur CPU today! will it burn to crisp? or will it cool down? he's not the first to document his adventures about it though, that honor would go to tenchi4u (then i was second :p)

and putting the heatspreader back on is just redundant, it won't be better contact than was already there.
 
Update: Stryker has started lappin his K8 silent boost heatsink. He's using 600 grit sand paper.
 
it's good enough. i remember when i was in rochester and needed sand paper, i could only hunt down 400 grit with my lack of a car :p
 
it is more about getting it "flat" than it is about getting it "shiny". As long as you don't use a grit that completely scores and scuffs the bottom (like one for wood), it'll be fine, even if you can't see your face in it. If you do want the shine though, be sure to use water, and for flat, a 100% flat surface like glass is a must.

I did that once, I ripped out the cord from PSU. Yesterday I was taking off my XP-90 and I unhooked the back, then when I went to unhook the front I accidently let go on the back (I wasn't thinking) and it sprung forward. Well... when it did that, it took the CPU w/ it. When I pulled it out, the whole front row of pins where bent on the CPU and some in the second. I just sat there saying to my self oh sh*t (me=:eek: . I sat there for an 1-2 hours getting the pins lined up. I finally did, I still couldn't beleived that happened. I should of took pictures to show people but I think I was kind of in that *Shocking* mood.
 
I bent pins on a Celeron 733 :cool: I just stuck the bent pins back in the socket and angled the chip and stuck it back in the socket and they bent back :)

And no, you are not the third person on this forum to remove the IHS, I was :)

Oh and I am pretty sure my Red MX510 owns the Blue one :cool:
