mp3s "skipping" in foobar

Recently, mp3 playback has begun to skip on my computer. Randomly in the middle of songs i will have a choppy, skipping sort of sound. It happens both in winamp5 and foobar2000 version .8. I dont know why this started or how to fix it. So far i have tried updating drivers, reinstalling foobar, and trying to find a setting that is off. It seems that it isnt the fault of hte player because it happens in both programs. Anyone have any ideas what it could be?
 
You multi-tasking at all when your mp3s skip?

I know that I can make my mp3s skip at will if I do certain things. ...and this is with 768 DDR.
 
they skip pretty much all the time, even when im just on aim and surfing the web. I have a gig of ram btw
 
I am having this problem too, I posted a thread about it before I saw yours. I only notice it when I am typing something, otherwise playback seems ok. As it happened to both of us so recently.. makes me wonder if it's some malicious code. :eek:

*edit I see you also have an Nforce motherboard... I am using driver ver 3.13 and the onboard audio on my Epox 8RDA+ and winamp 2.91
 
hmm, well im using a Audigy2 ZS so that means we probably arent sharing a sound card issue, but it might be another driver problem? hopefully someone will have an idea
 
i was just experimenting and noticed that my skipping happens while im typing too. I'm using an MX Duo w/ the default windows drivers if that might matter.
 
I had this happen on my old computer. (would start to skip during playback) I changed the mp3 codec and it worked. it was an 'intervideo' mp3 codec that was making mine skip.

Maybe you can try changing it? I dont have access to the computer right at this moment but on current computer it has 'Fraunhofer IIS MPEG Layer-3 codec'

Wouldn't matter in the least bit. Winamp and Foobar do not use any installed codecs for playing mp3s. Both programs contain their own mp3 decoder.
 
maybe your mp3's are fragmented? or corrupted? check your HD and defrag.

I've only had foobar skip when I started up games, and even then usually I don't, so I don't have any other advice.
 
im degragging right now but i dont think it has to do with the files themselves. Remember, it only skips when im typing. This is driving me crazy
 
In winamp, when it skips, does it still seem like Winamp is streaming the file from the disk? Does the small vis window in winamp act like it is looking for the song? or does it continue processing the mp3 as usual...?

If it seems to be processing the filestream ok, then you can rule out a harddrive transfer issue. Then, try a different mouse and keyboard, since someone mentioned using wireless, that driver might be somehow screwing with your sound, if the USB controller has some irq/dma's shared with your soundcard.
 
I've got a plain vanilla IBM ps/2 windows keyboard and my mouse is USB but using the ps/2 adapter. I have the refresh rate on the mouse at 200hz - maybe the mouse and keyboard eat up enough bandwidth to cause some burps during audio playback? I'll try switching the mouse back to USB and see if this eliminates the issue.
 
earlier today i switched my mouse and keyboard from the ps2 to the usb port, and my sound has been perfect since. kinda wierd huh?
 
Me too... seems to have resolved the issue. Very strange. I dont know whether to blame the motherboard or winamp or just bad drivers.
 
I have had the same issue for the longest time. I have tried changing PCI Latencies etc... and it went away for a while, but then started back up again. I also downloaded a program that removes the "Turbo" feature which Audigy cards have enabled, and I thought that that had fixed the problem, but today when palying Unreal 2004 for the first time I kept hearing cracking sounds just like my mp3's used to do while I typed. Im gonna try moving my keyboard and stuff see if that works.

We answered it in this thread too. Still, you should be able to utilize both ps/2 ports with no issues. If this is an nForce specific problem maybe someone should contact nvidia.
 
Too bad I dont have a USB keyboard or else I would try it.

There was a period of time were i didnt have the skipping issue, but now it has started again....really annoying!!!
