MP3 renaming tool recommendation

I'm looking for software that can rename and organize a varied collection of mp3's. The idea is that it would be one large directory with a standard format like artist-song.

I have both windows xp and linux and don't mind using either to get the job done. Ideally I would like the software to be free but don't mind paying for something that will do what I am looking for.

I have researched different solutions on google, and there seem to be a few good paid options, but I would like the personal experience from people who have actually used something.

Any ideas?

I use MediaMonkey to keep my music organized. It lets you move and rename files based on the tags, for example, I have my CDs organized as /CD/'artist name' - 'CD title'/'track number' - 'track title'

It also will also retrieve tag information if it can identify the CD, which is useful if you want to have album art or your tag information is incomplete.

Oh, and its free.

Both MP3 tag studio and MediaMonkey are what I'm looking for. Thanks for the help spiper and ilikecake.

Ive found mediamonkey to be excellent, very intuitive. I did three 12 hour marathon tagging sessions with it about a month ago, i was very happy with the results.

I use Tag & Rename which has all the features I want, but it doesn't seem to support Ogg Vorbis very well (corrupts the headers). I started using Media Monkey for Ogg.

Tag&Rename ftw! It's a bit daunting for a first-time user, but once you spend time with it and delve into its inner workings, you'll soon find it does things no other software even comes close to do, and with deadly efficiency. No muss, no fuss. Highly recommended...

I'm currently using mediamonkey to get album art for most of my mp3's. I'm on day 3 now. :)

awesome, just wanted to pop in and say thanks, i was about to make a post asking the same exact question :D

It seems the consensus is Mediamonkey. I am going to try that first. Thanks again for the recommendations! One does not always get these sort of great responses when posting a question on forums so I truly appreciate it.

another vote for musicbrainz Picard. and I use "Audio Tag Tool" for manual edits

2nd the mp3tag.de, it's the best I've used. The likes of Tag&Rename is only for serious power users.

While the other recommended options seem good, I have been using mediamonkey for the past 2 days. It's features and flexibility have blown me away. There are just so many cool things that help in getting songs properly formatted and organized. While the extra features of the pro version seem like they could be useful, the free version lets me do everything I need to organize my files. Thanks again people!
