Is there a way I can setup a server where I can hookup speakers and have the server play songs from a MP3 collection.

Yes.

1. install os
2. install mp3 playing software
3. copy over mp3s(or mount a share)
4. play mp3s

Or are you trying to control the mp3 player from a client machine?

heh. I guess I was assuming too much when I didn't mention he had to hook up the speakers. :D

But yeah, you have to hook speakers up to the server for it to be able to play mp3s through its speakers.

That's hilarious. That is exactly what a PC does. Are you wanting to stream the music from a server to a client machine or to your home stereo?

There are plenty of remotely-controllable mp3 players. For example, the xmmsd plugin for xmms allows you to control xmms using a web browser. There are also plenty of plugins to control xmms from the command line, so you could ssh to the server and change songs there. Or, better yet, just use a terminal-based mp3 player so that you can control everything from an ssh connection.

I want to have it so that I don't have to turn on a computer everytime when I just want to listen to some music.

Hmm, Xmms sounds interesting, ill read up on it.

EDIT: I see its Unix, but on the server I want to use, its Windows 2000. Since Xmms is like Winamp, think winamp has a kinda remote control plugin? Also, how do I do ssh?

How do you expect to run WInamp without turning on the computer?

And that "connect speakers" comment had me falling out of my chair! And I'm at work! :D

No, I will have a server running 24/7, so I won't have to turn on another computer to play music over speakers, ill just run my game one. Because my game one is on headphones, and the shuttle(surf/music) is on speakers, and it takes tooo long to turn on the shuttle just to play some music.

Odd, I still don't get what you're trying to do.

I have three computers at home.
All three are connected to a router (ethernet cable and 802.11G).
I can use my laptop to access the MP3s on my desktop (via Windows file sharing) and the sound will play through my laptop speakers.

Are you trying to do something like that?

guys, I think he's trying to setup a home theatre mp3 server.

to the OP:

use Windows Remote Desktop to connect to the server, however make sure you tell it to not "bring sound to your computer". I did this all through college and once I get my house I'll get it set back up.

with all these suggestions, I don't see how this guy should not be able to get this working...no matter what he's trying to do.

EDIT: since you are using 2000...read up in terminal server or RAdmin.com

Ahh thats how I do it. So will that work with Win2000? Because I know it does with Winxp.

you beat me to my edit...

read up on RAdmin at radmin.com.....or look up VNC....it'll get the job done.

Yea you, could look up VLC. at www.videolan.org good for streaming stuff. and runs on everything...like the netbsd of media players

Another alternative would be run a webserver w/ php. and Write a small script to generate m3u's for whatever selection of music you wanna here.

However if you are looking for just an appliance style that doesnt run off a comp just look at some shit from linksys they gotta buncha media crap like that.
