Hey All,
I am not sure if this the right forum for this, but here Goes...
I am looking into MP3 Players
And i need help picking one out
My 2 Big Concern's are Battery Life, and Storage

Have a loook at the Creative Xen. Its the same price as the mini iPod (in the UK anyway), has 20Gb storage and 24hr battery life. My housemate just got one and is very pleased with it.

well.. it's a bit more complex than that.

how MUCH storage do you need

are you going to use it for working out

If you are going to more than just simply walking, I don't recommend anything with moving parts, it's as simple as that.

That being said, you can get up to 2gb "flash-ram" mp3 players nowadays.

The Creative MuvoTX (and tx fm) come in up to 1 gb capacities

Sandisk makes a 1gb mp3/voice recorder/usb key for ~135

the 2gb thing out there is philips, but it's like $249

Now.. if you want to store ya know.. 10 gigs -> 60gigs.. look at the zen XTRA [my only complaint about mine is the interface is a bit counter intuitive, but at half the price of a similairly featured IPOD, and more battery life [i get about 10 hours out of mine after owning it a while] for half the price, I can deal with that.

I just wouldn't recommend any "hard" work outs with it.
 
For a hard drive based player, I like the Creative Nomad Xen Xtra 40GB. It's what I'm currently using and I'm happy with it. I did get to play with an iRiver 20GB as well, and it was very nice too.
 
Yes, i will be using this while i workout, in my office and much other stuff
I have over 100 gig's of music
So i am looking at an 20-40 gigger for a nice playlist to take with me
And 24 hour contious play is an plus

I really have to repeat ...that if you are going to workout, you shouldn't have a moving parts player..

with that taken into consideration, you aren't going to find a 20-40 gig non moving parts

so, you'll have to live with shortened drive integrity... but seriously, do you need 20-40 gigs for your WORKOUT?

I say get yourself two..
One for the office [like me]
One for portable [like me]

512mb = 8 1/2 HOURS of music @ 128kbps/44.1/16bit/stereo

Even if you encode at 256k like I do.. you are looking at over 4 hours of music.. I don't know about you, but I don't work out for 4 hours at a time.

You could look at a microdrive solution (4gb) which I think is more sturdy than hdd based, and has more storage than memory based.. -- creative muvo2 comes to mind

Let me know if you really get anywhere close to 24 hrs with it.. Like I said, I don't.. I get 10 maybe.. but then again, I dunno, maybe 256k mp3 takes more energy to decode..
 
You won't get 24 hours. But in my experience, you'll get enough for the whole day, and then you just stick it in the charger at night.

I dont know about that, my friend has one, and he tested the play, he had his playing for 23 hours straight.
 
Then I must've gotten shafted with the battery...

I believe that encoding also makes a difference in battery life. I use variable bit rate stuff from lame + eac at alt preset standard/extreme (depends on the album). Variable bit rate tends to drain power more from what I understand, since more processing is done (and more power consumed in the process). Of course, I could be completely wrong...
Volume makes a difference as well... I had them nearly maxxed... it was a few long car trips and I plugged into a cassette adaptor for my car...
 
If you have a Zen Xtra, you won't get 24 hours. That model only gets ~ 14. The new Zen Touch is the one that is supposed to get 24 hours. They're two different models.
 
Well, I learned my lesson with my old Creative Nomad Jukebox 6GB with its shitty software and the fact that it barely lasted 4 months before it died - I'll never buy a Creative product again.

Anyway, I'm 110% pleased with my iRiver H320. Especially with Red Chair Software's iRivium Explorer to manage my music library. I think I should've gone with the 40GB model though, since my GF has started putting all her music on it too. :rolleyes:
