I think this is probably a long shot, but a guy at work asked me if an mp3 player existed that you could use an external hard drive as a source.
He's got a 120gig USB drive and he's looking for a player that he can plug that hard drive into and play the mp3s from that.

Any such beast exist?

I can't think of any that accept USB hard drives as additional storage options, but I have heard of an MP3 player that could use external hard drives. The first generation Toshiba GigaBeat used 1.8" hard drives in a PCMCIA interface that could be swapped out and connected to any PCMCIA interface, like most notebook computers.
