I'm looking at the Cowon S9 32GB Flash player since it supports FLAC. Unfortunately, it is only has 32GB of storage and there is no SDHC slot. Therefore, this will be a temporary device for me.

It does the beg the question to Cowan why they don't introduce SOMETHING WITH SD or MICRO-SD capability. I swear, I know they have a great reputation among the high end crowd in terms of DAPs, but geezus, will someone please tell them that perhaps adding such support could greatly increase their market share, and fast? 
Hell, I have about 11 Micro-SD cards laying around, mostly 1GB but some 2GB ones, and I was at Walmart last week and found this silly SanDisk "player" that's basically as big as a Bic lighter. Powered by 1 AAA battery, headphone jack, volume control, Play/Next/Stop buttons, and a Micro-SD slot on it, that's it - talk about bare bones simplicity, and no display. They had it for $15 and it's designed to be used with Micro-SD cards with albums on 'em (they had a few but I could care less).
The packaging said it'll work with any Micro-SD card so I grabbed one, got it home, transferred a few tunes to one of those cards I had and stuck it in, it works great. Simple, quick, deadly efficient, and it actually sounds pretty damned good through my standard headphones, Koss KSC-75 with a few mods. Gets fairly loud too...
No I'm not recommending it for all purpose playback but, geez, $15, how can you go wrong for something that plays mp3 files.
I guess if I had to go out and get a 32GB player nowadays I'd grab an iPod touch again. I've had two in the past (1st generation 8GB and then a 2nd generation 8GB). They're nice, they sound good, and they do just work. I never really did much with 'em, Jailbroke it of course (the 1st gen, when I had the 2nd gen they hadn't done it yet, and I still think it's a work in progress), and put some apps on 'em but never really became that involved with them. Video playback is ok, but the battery life is horrid when you're playing videos, which is a given.
The biggest negative about owning an iPod touch? iTunes, without any doubt. It's a must use thing with an iPod touch, that's the primary downside. Sure there are some apps that will let you move content on and off the device, but serious management and integration with the apps... it's gotta be iTunes, like it or not.

my brother got an ipod touch, you have to convert every single video you wanna put on it, as it only supports mpg4. i have his old creative zen 30G which you can pretty much drag and drop.
also you have to use itunes with the ipod and you can only have it synced to one computer and its really retarded how you can just drag a song on you have to add it to your itunes libary and sync it. anyway its really annoying.

I had thought about the iTouch, however it does not support FLAC. Apple has their own proprietary lossless audio codec called ALAC. It don't want to convert my current audio library to ALAC just so that I can play it back on a DAP.
However, I do know of a work around to by-pass Apple's DRM. Installing a program called JailBreak will allow non-Apple applications to be installed on an iPhone / iTouch. But it voids the warranty and I have read a few instances where JailBreak froze or basically killed their iPhone / iTouch. In order to get it working again, they basically had to beg Apple for a replacement. They mailed back their defunct iPhone / iTouch and basically paid Apple 50% - 60% the price of new one to have it "fixed".
Anywaste, the "un-authorized" program which allows the iPhone / iTouch to play FLAC, H.264 and other media files is called VLC.
The Cowon D2 supports SD/SDHC expansion. Though, that might be a bit too big for a MP3 player.
I'm planning on picking up a S9 fairly soon. Sure, the flash limit is a pain, but being able to support my library of FLAC and being much smaller than the S9 is worth it.
