Mozilla Firefox 1.0 is out!

yeah, that's the nightly build. and since the official release is tomorrow, it's gonna be pretty darn close to being the official release. they may still change something very slightly, but i'm not sure.

I just got it one minute ago. Options got its own icon. Tabbrowser is now incorporated into the browser, so no extension is needed anymore. So far it killed a few other extensions, however. None mattered, except one I like called External Application Buttons. Maybe it will be updated shortly. Aside from that, it seems a tiny bit quicker. The really big difference on my machine is the mouse, especially scrolling. It is noticeably smoother. That's the quick review. :D

UPDATE: All the extensions that I consider essential have now been fixed. Some you may have to reinstall, however. Get them here.

I believe it stood for "Preview Release". Well, pretty much any pre1.0 build was a "technological preview" as Mozilla puts it--simple b/c stability was STILL being tested heavily back then.

You guys who are finally jumping on the Firefox wagon missed the fun of the 0.6 and 0.7 years (last year haha). Yeah, one year makes a HUGE difference.

How's that? Phoenix was easily the best on the block at 0.3 :p
0.2 was iffy, though.

Yeah! Got it early this morning!

Now, if only the [H] could RSS their news.....

:D

I have a PR from a few weeks ago, and it is quite buggy on my laptop, only opening pages 50% of the time when IE works 100%...

I hope I can now have 1.0 final and dump IE all together!

just downloaded; I'll be installing this afternoon.

Any extensions I need to look at?

Here's what I have right now:
Gmail notifier
FoxyTunes (god I love this one on my laptops-no media keys on the keyboard)
OpeninIE
TabBrowser Preferences

1.0 final is out.. but mozilla.org is being hammered. try Mozilla Europe: http://www.mozilla-europe.org/en/

oh and this is interesting.. http://www.google.com/firefox
what does this mean? maybe a google branded browser in the future? integrated gmail? hmmm

You know I had the google toolbar installed in IE and upon installing a firefox release candidate.... it was still there. It has like a firefox mode or something built right in. It was on the right instead of left and the google symbol was a tiny bit different, but that makes it all the more intersting that it customized itself into that browser automagically. Doesn't seem like the code just worked but rather the program knew. Interesting that there programs are so friendly with it. It adds some merit to those claims I think.

Actually whether or not you had it for IE it would have been in Firefox, it comes with.

Actually, its not the google toolbar, its a built in search bar, you can search yahoo, amazon and many other with it. Google and this toolbar (firefox) only has the fact that they can search on google in comon. Firefox toolbar does NOT use the google toolbar popupblocker. Firefox toolbar does NOT autofill your forms. Firefos toolbar does NOT allow you to customize your google preferences and it does not allow you to "highlight" the search you done on the webpage you visit. Even tho all these feature can be done by firefox.

to quote google:

Does the toolbar work with Mozilla/ Netscape/ Linux/ Firefox/ AOL or MSN?
We decided to first release the Google Toolbar in Microsoft Internet Explorer. We are examining the feasibility of offering a toolbar that is compatible with other browsers such as Netscape and Mozilla; however, this version is currently unavailable. We apologize for this inconvenience and will keep this suggestion in mind for future versions of the Toolbar.

Its much, MUCH faster to just type:

dict + [word]

in the location bar.

I do this all the time when I'm reading a page and don't understand the word being used. Definitely something I wish I had much younger. I kid you not--having a dictionary on the web, and having the functionality built-into Firefox (since 0.8 I believe); its unbelievable.

Yes, yes, thank you... ;)

I had a rather bad experience upgrading I though I'd share.

1st, couldn't update through the manager. No biggie, servers are hammered. I'll download it and install... Download update, close FF, run install, setup goes OK. Open FF, no bookmarks. Well, I have bookmarks, but they are missing from the bookmark bar. Check the bookmark manager, the bookmarks are all there... Disable bookmar bar, enable it, close FF, reopen, still not there. The bar is there, no bookmarks.

OK, deal with that in a minute, I see something worse now, the address bar is blank. I'm surfing, opening pages, but I can't see the address I just opened. Also the status bar doesn't display links when I hover over them. OK something is real fucked at this point. Rebooting the machine has not affect.

Time to uninstall/reinstall. I look in my add/remove programs and see something that irks me to NO end. Sloppy installer/uninstallers. I see 2 entries for FF. FF1.0PR, and FF1.0 (started using FF about .9 and have been autoupgrading through the util in FF). I uninstall the PR thinking something is left over. I choose to keep the directory for now (trying to keep my options/plugins/bookmarks). After this is done, I open FF, still the same.

I try to uninstall FF 1.0, no dice. Something to the effect that the uninstaller is missing the uninstall file (guessing the 1.0PR removed it when it was finished).

Reinstall FF 1.0, again no dice.

Uninstall FF 1.0 (since it was reinstalled the uninstall files were back), removing the directory. At this point I said fuck it, and was going to rebuild settings/bookmarks/plugins.

Reinstall FF 1.0. YEA!! All issues resolved. It managed to keep my bookmarks, after deleting the directory (diddn't verify this, just let the uninstaller do it's thing). It lost my extensions, only had a handfull so not that big a deal.

Anyways, there you have it... my FF sob-story. Of course I will still be using FF, but this is the first black-eye it's gotten in my book.

you don't need tabbrowser preferences. tabbrowser extensions now come standard with 1.0... and it's SOOOO much better than the preferences (ie. does 100x more things plus the same stuff preferences does, so no point in having the preferences)

anyway, as for other extensions... here's what i have: (not all compatible w/1.0 yet)

mozilla calendar
bandwidth tester
download manager tweak
dictionary search
sage
target alert
statusbar clock
weatherfox (now called forecastfox)
fireftp
paste and go
windows update
card games
ie view

well, i have more installed, but those are the ones i use from time to time

That's pretty bad, but those issues were worse back in 0.8 and 0.9 when they were experimenting with some changes. And well, if you were playing around with nightlies back then, you had to have backups ready. The thing is, I've done clean installs since 0.6, just for these reasons. The day that FF installer experience is ultimately bug-free (still a while off) then that's when I'll go back. It's still .zip builds for me.
