Moving processor between motherboards

Hi, I have a 3500+ . I don't think I can get at the chip without taking the heat sink off, which would break apart the thermal gel. Do I need to buy new thermal gel, clean, and reapply, or can I just put the processor in the new board, then the heatsink? Thanks.

Edit: looks like I have to buy a new thermal composite. Should I buy new aftermarket cooling as well? (Stock AMD now)

yeah, that's the basic idea...
get some arctic silver, or shin etsu or something..

it will work if you reuse the old thermal pad, but it won't work near as well.. you could end up running 10 degrees hotter...

so get some good thermal compound, clean, and reapply..

well, you HAVE to take the heatsink fan off to get to the processor. You might want to let the system warm up (boot it up) before you do b/c you could rip the CPU out of the socket. The thermal grease (especially stock) is almost like glue when it is room temperature.

You will need to buy new thermal compund (Artic Silver 5 works best for me) and apply it to the cpu again and seat the cpu on to on the new motherboard

good luck

And you clean that with rubbing alcolhol, right?

Actually, now that I'm buying a new thermal compound, should I buy an aftermarket fan as well so I can overclock it?

Also this fan looks nice, will it work well for this application? : http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16835128009

Thanks guys.

Well, I have never seen a hsf that is intel/amd64/amd k7 capable in my life! Is that a screw on or a clip?

btw, yes - that is a good hsf!
