Well fellas right now I'm running a BFG 6800 GT OC and I just purchased a X800 XT from ebay. It's brand new not out of it's package yet. The 6800 GT is a good card but I'm not as happy with it in the AA and AF department. Seems like the X800 XT is faster in most categories and runs Half Life 2 like no other; I'm playing that a lot and CS:S so I figured I'd make the leap back to the ATI side.

Are the 4.12 drivers the best ones right now for Half Life2/CS:S or should I look at another driver set?

I went with the Sapphire Xtasy card. From what I could tell that seemed to be a pretty solid card.

Good choice James. Nice to see a few people come back after the Nvidia bandwagon rolled on down the road.

Yes the Beta 4.12's are supposed to be the best for HL2 and such. I'm running the 4.11's with no problems. Either set will do good I'm sure.

Mister E,

Do you have Half Life 2? If so what FPS are you getting and with what settings when running the stress test?

Yes I have HL2. I run it at 1280x1024 max details including 'reflect all' for the water. 4xAA/16xAF. Inside maps get awesome 90-100 fps. Outside dips to 35fps in some of the large water sections, but mostly rides in the 50-70fps range. If I change to 'reflect world' and 8xAF the fps never dips below 45 outside.

In the CS;S video stress test (using same settings above) I get 94 fps.

I use 4.12b's and have been for a long while. They're great. There was a new update recently for CSS I think that really helped my framerate. I play at 1600 6xAA / 16xAF and before would drop to 45 or so during large battles, now I don't drop below 60. It's sexy :)

I play HL2 at either 2048 2xAA / 16xAF or 1600 4xAA / 16xAF. You can find my benchmark results here.

VST @ 1600 / RA / 6xAA / 16xAF = 95 FPS

FYI, I had a video issue in HL2 running the 4.12 betas on my Athlon XP/X800 Pro rig. Doors and weapons would flicker in and out of visibility, especially at 1600x1200 with the eye-candy cranked. I cleaned and loaded the 4.10 beta-based Omegas and the problem was solved. There was no noticable loss in performance, either.

I ran 16x12, 2xTAA/4xAF, all HL2 eye-candy at max and it was smooth and gorgeous. You should have no problem doing that with your XT.

The Omega 2.5.97's were just released you might want to give those a look. They are based on the Cat 4.12beta's and usually offer a small but nice fps boost free of charge.

I installed those Omegas to the instructions and it caused me to go into a boot loop, had to drop the Omegas all together now...... But hey, I can play Dooms 3 now with no artifacts!!!

I Believe its a Visiontek if its an Xtasy. Not that it matters. I wish I could sell off my 6800 Ultra and get back my XT :( . I think the cards are over rated and seem slower overall than my 'old' XT. Ah well

my condolences on your recent loss and return to the dark side..

my you once again see the light.

That has gotta be the crappest thing I've ever read.....

BTW its 'may' not 'my';)

And to the guy that has flickering issues...I had the same with the beta's, went back to 4.11 and its fine now.....apparantley the WHQL 4.12's are coming out soon

I wish I had gone with my gut and got an X800pro Vivo. I bought the Ultra its not that its a bad card, very fast indeed. It just feels as though my friends XT PE performs better with AA and AF enabled at 1600x1200. Oh well, congrats on your card.

That is why I'm going back to ATI. My GT seems to bogg down with AA and AF enabled. I always did think that ATI handled that better.

The 4.12's are definitely a step up in all games, not just HL2. I'm averaging 69fps in HL2 and 97.5fps on the VST both at 1600x1200 6xAA 16xAF.
