Movie viewing on 2007WFP

A week or two ago i recieved my 2007WFP, and i have a slight concern about it. It looks incredible while playing games (CS:S, WoW, etc.) however when i watch movies i'm disappointed. If I sit my normal distance from the screen the movies looks washed out and grainy, like its at a low res, with the colors just "screwed up." (like for skin its not skin color, you can distinguish yellow,red,orange, etc., they don't blend very well i guess). It looks a lot better if i sit 4-5 feet away, but still a washed out. If I play movies so they are windowed and are only have the screen they look like I would have expected them, very sharp and crisp, with the colors pretty much normal. Also, I have slight banding, although I have only notice it when running a gradient test. Is this how the monitor should be displaying movies?
 
I'm getting the same things...But your software to play DVD's (Power DVD for me) you can change certain settings and stuff to make it look better, it worked for me for the most part. I am however, still a little disappointed in the movie watching experience myself :/

YOu do realize you're watching a regular 480 res video on a very high res HD monitor....its not going to look perfect. they extra pixels on the LCD dont know what to do, they guess and guess wrong a lot.

So when you have it windowed and scaled down you are watching it at a 1:1 ratio, but when you have it fullscreen you are using more pixels then the move has....this leads to problems sometimes, and its not uncommon to see problems.


Try using different DVD software, somtimes this can help.
 
Yeah, I have this monitor and noticed grain on movies if I sat close. I don't watch movies on my comp though, but was just testing. This was to be expected though cause you are taking a 480 movie source and fullscreening it on a 1680X1050 res monitor. Non HD movies are always going to look grainy close up when you fullscreen it on any high res monitor such as this. It's not the fault of the monitor though, but the fault of the low res dvd source video.
 
Of course you see grain, even with 720p and 1080p, but just not that much.
 
Try downloading a HD trailer and see if it looks better then movies on DVD, If it looks fine then it standard DVD having problems with monitors
 
How do movies look on the VX2025? It came between that monitor and the 2007WFP and i'm considering returning this for a 2025 if it looks much better.
 
Did you miss the posts in this thread about taking a low quality video source and upscaling it to fit on your 2007?

Switching to a different LCD isn't going to change your experience with the graininess you're experiencing during movie watching. Go to apple.com and grab an HD movie trailer as suggested in this thread and watch it scaled to fit your screen and you will notice a quality difference.

Again, it's not the monitor; it's your video source.
 
Exactly. Unless that viewsonic can magically change the source dvd video and turn it into a high def video, then it's going to look just as grainy on the viewsonic, since it uses the same resolution as the dell.
 
There are options for making SD DVD playback look very very good on a hd LCD monitor: but, it takes a little effort. A good way to start is by spending a couple of weekends reading all the HTPC forum threads.
