So recently ive been doing a lot of video encoding and i was wondering if it would be worth it to move to an i7 860 instead of my i5 750? the reason i would be going to an 860 and not a 920 is because i dont wanna have to change mobos. I wasn't sure how much it would effect the performance of video encoding, or if it would even be worth it, which is why i wanted to ask here first. right now it is on sale at micro center for 229.99 as opposed to neweggs 289.99.

i would sell the i5 for probably around 130-150 since iv'e only had it 5 months. so the i7 would be a net cost of roughly 100 dollars

Well the I7 860 does support HT. Do the programs that you use take advantage of HT? If so, then you will benefit from it.

is use handbrake to convert all my vids, mainly because it has an option that makes videos compatable wit the xbox. how much though would HT help? right now it takes about 1 hour to convert a 2 hour video to h264 format. would the program have to be able to use HT for it to help with the conversion time?

Realistically, the net performance increase vs the cost just isn't there.

If you want a real boost, sell your 1156 setup and go 1366.

(I also debated the i5-750/i7-860 and it just wasn't justifiable.)

If you live near a Fry's electronics and can get one of thier 860 combo's, do it and sell the motherboard with your 750.

just out of curiosity of price, what frys combos are you talking about?

and i know the whole thing about going to 1136 as opposed to 1156 but i just dont have the money for that right now

If the program that you use takes advantage of HT, it will show a noticeable difference.
