what would doing the following require, my new employer has an old desktop pc running NT server 4.0 for AD just for sign on to the workstations and it also runs another prog for the said workstations, we need to move it to some better hardware, maybe one of my cheap Dell sc420's, i really dont want to reinstall the OS, and i dont think he has the disk either, it was installed and setup alooong time ago, i want to image the current hard drive, a 40gb western digital ata drive, to a SCSI setup in RAID 1, is NT 4.0 going to bsod like xp would when you change the drive controller?

worse actually.

reason NT 4,0 did not have PnP capability.

NT 4.0 doesn't have AD.

Why are you wanting to rebuild it as NT 4.0 versus 2K or 2K3?

Just load 2k3 onto that sc420, join it to the domain, promote it, and demote the old one.

Then you can work on getting your DNS & DHCP server setup, along with AD.

Is there any reason why you want to stay on NT4?

Umm, you don't promote 2K3 servers... That's NT4/W2K server.

In 2K3 you are either a DC or member server.

umm hello??

checks windows 2003 standard and enterprise edition.....

DCPROMO IS on the servers and they DO promote to DC when the command is ran.

Gah, I'm thinking PDC/BDC, yes DCPROMO is still used on 2K3 to change member servers to DCs.

I guess I was confused why you would promote when you could just setup the server as a DC in the first place.
