.mov to .avi, .mpg help

Hello everyone.

My camera (Nikon Coolpix S7C) can record movies. When I transfer them onto my computer, they are in quicktime format. I am planning to make a video of various clips I found over the years including my recent camera videos. First, can someone tell me a good program to convert quicktime movies to avi or mpg files while preserving the quality/sound equally?

Also, what is a good start level video editing software that can be used with various video formats but can also add some awesome effects to videos? I plan to add pictures to the video as well. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

Here try this it's freeware it is called Super and pretty much does it ALL video frame size, frame rate, Audio sample rate, as well as video and audio format type.
