how does microsoft's optical mice compare to logitech's mx series. i notice microsoft does not list dpi specs for their mice. thanks.

I got a MS Mouse with my Wireless Elite and it was terrible trying to use that as opposed to my mx518.

The new MS mice have a smooth scroll wheel so you can't use them in games. Well, you can, but you're a far better gamer than me if you actually use it to switch weapons. So right there that eliminates them as gamin mice IMO.

lol. i do use the scroll wheel to switch weapons. do the ms mice offer the same dpi?

MS Intellimouse 4.0 = 400dpi, LED
Logitech MX300/510 = 800dpi, LED
Logitech MX1000 = 800dpi, laser
Logitexh MX518 = 1600dpi, LED
Razer Diamondback Plasma = 1600dpi, IR LED
Razer Copperhead = 2000dpi, laser

IMHO, the Intellimouse is a sad joke for gaming. TERRIBLE mouse. If you were buying from the Logitech line, the MX518 is the best bet. If you want the best gaming mouse money can buy...that's the Razer Copperhead. (Released this week, but gods only know where you can buy one yet!)

Well the 2000DPI isn't much of an increase over 1600

The logitech 518 has the edge in the speed of changing the sensitivity. it's a quick toggle on the mouse. go from sniping to run-n-gun mode in a click.

Well, the Copperhead also has:
* Laser actuated sensor
* Customizable weights for the mouse
* Customizable buttons for the mouse (as in, physically customizable, not just programmable)
* 32k of onboard memory on the mouse to store game profiles (so you can take them with you from system to system)
* Onboard flash ROM so the mouse can have firmware updates applied to add features or improve performance down the road

Never thought of that. Might be worth picking one up to play around with it some (although the shape drives me NUTS), as that's kinda a neat concept. I tend to just crank the sensitivity on the Diamondback and leave it there for any given app, as it's too much of a chore *in game* to adjust it (although I tend to roll back and forth between higher sense and lower sense modes when working in Photoshop - so the slider with the wide range of sensitivities instead of just "high" or "low" is rather handy).

FWIW, although I've seen no reviews of it, Saitek *also* has a 1600dpi mouse, that lets you flip between 800dpi mode and 1600dpi mode witha single button, as well. Plus, it's got a MUCH better layout than the MX mice. Kinda a hybrid of the Diamondback and MX518 layout, actually.

Will be interesting to see how much it ends up weighing.

Its annoying with the MS mice you will always go past the weapon you want with their scroll wheels.

You work for Razer don't you. :p

If you want an actual GAMING mouse don't get the MS. That pretty much sums up the thread. Anything else is pure preference. I don't like the shape and feel of the Razer mice, so Logitech is my preference. Go to BB and try them out. Get whichever feels better.

i went out to check some out and it looks like i'll have to get the mx310 as i am left handed. this sucks. the saitek looks decent. i don't know much about them though. any input?

Saitek is not yet available in the US.

The Razer Diamondback - which even Best Buy stocks, now - is ambidextrous, though, so you might want to take a look at that one.

I would take a Logitech mouse over a Microsoft mouse any day. I've used both and hands down I think Logitech produces better performing products then Microsoft. But that's just me. As for left handed mice, I don't have any advice there...

I have read good reviews on the saitek as well, but from what i've read, the switch on the logitech was hardware level, and the switch on the dimondback was software installed. I guess it's more of a tossup really.
