Mouse Macros - How Do They Work?

When you use a mouse such as a gaming mouse to program/assign a macro to a mouse button does the mouse software update the firmware on the mouse?

1. Mouse Software->Create Macro->Update Mouse Firmware
2. Mouse Click->Mouse Driver->Generate Mouse Action(s)

Or does the mouse software save the macro/mouse button settings in some file that the mouse driver knows about and so when you click a mouse button the driver reads the settings file(s) and knows what to do?

1. Mouse Software->Create Macro->Update Settings File(s)
2. Mouse Click->Mouse Driver->Read Settings File->Generate Mouse Action(s)

Or finally, does the mouse software actually update the drivers themselves?

1 Mouse Software->Create Macro->Rebuild/Update Mouse Driver
2. Mouse Click->Mouse Driver->Generate Mouse Action(s)

Or none of the above? :)

Thank you,

Jan

A combination of the first two depending upon the mouse. Some are able to save settings on the mouse, however the driver and software still plays a role. Most mice can't do macros without the proper driver and software installed.

I'm not entirely sure, but based on using my G9x mouse. I would agree and say it's a combination of the first two. When I set up macros in the software, I can save the profiles more or less to the computer, or to the mouse. In the first case, it only works with the software and it will automatically change between games if I elect for it to do so. In the second case, it will save them to the mouse and if I take the mouse to a different computer without the logitech gaming software installed, the macros will still work.
