Mouse losing power PLEASE HELP!

I bought a Microsoft intelli Explorer 3.0 last year and its a great mouse, it was the usb version. The mouse was working fine for about 6 months but then the mouse kept going off, losing power. Let me explain...

Because the mouse is optical it has a red light on it, this blinks on and off which is why i think its losing power. When it does this, i cannot move my mouse, after a few seconds the mouse comes back on and is fine. Sometimes when this happens i get a bubble come up on the taksbar saying "one of your USB devices have malfunctioned"

Anyway i rang microsoft up, they sent me a replacement for free but they sent the newer model, the 4.0. Ive been using this mouse for at least 4 months now and its been fine up until recently. This mouse is doing the exact same thing as my other mouse did. Losing power, red light flashing on and off, but the thing is this mouse isnt a usb, its a ps2 connector. It seems every few days it gets worse, yesterday i had to pull out the ps2 mouse and plug it back in for it to work and today i had to reboot to get it to work because both mouse and keyboard didnt work.

Yesterday when i unplugged the mouse, i also unplugged the keyboard which is usb, when i plugged the mouse in on its own it didnt work, however when i plugged in the usb keyboard it worked. I pulled out the keyboard and the mouse lost power, i plugged it back in and it came back on.

What is going on here? Intelli Explorer 3.0 USB going wrong, now the 4.0 which is ps2 is doing the same thing as the 3.0 did. I ran microsoft and they are sending me another replacement but this isnt the point, i would like to know what is going wrong.
 
Sounds like your cord is going bad IMO. It has happened to every single corded mouse I have ever owned (regardless of brand). Over time they as you move them around, strain is put on the thin cables inside and eventually they start to break giving you intermittent problems, and eventually they cease to function. If manufacturers would put that extra plastic to prevent strain from going on the actual cable (look at plugs where it attaches to the cord for instance) I think this would be largely avoided. It's why I went to a wireless mouse and have never looked back.
 
LOL I've actually had this same problem with the same mouse and same symptoms.

I never found out what actually caused it (maybe my dying PSU didn't give enough power or something until I got a new one?)

But my mouse would only cut out and start blinking during a game of Counter-Strike which made it even more odd. Since then, I've reformated and reinstalled windows (i do this about every 3 months), replaced a blown PSU, and have never seen the problem again...

so i never really found out what it was. good luck. it might not be your mouse
 
We had a keyboard quit working once, it was a symtom of a failing psu. Our mouse quit working then the graphics started screwing up, just a series of wierd things. Changed the psu and got it fixed.
 
It cant be the PSU... when it did this on my intelli 3 i had a q-tec PSU and with this intelli 4 im using a new Antec power supply and getting the same problems.

It happens over time, i think it is wear on the wire now you mention it. Microsoft is yet again sending me another intelli mouse, the 4.0 again but if it is the wire wearing out over time, what can i do to the wire to ensure this new intelli mouse im getting wont wear out?
 
LOL. I've had the EXACT same mouse, and the EXACT same problem. Actually, I went through four mouses because of this. One day it got very bad so I picked up a Logitech MX500 and, after around a year, I've had zero problems.

It's the Microsoft mouse.
 
randysway... why would it do this then? A microsoft mouse fine for many months and then messing up?

Im really tempted to go buy a MX510 but im not sure yet.
 
My IE 3.0 has been going strong for well over a year now, maybe it's how you have it setup that is somehow excessively fatiguing the cord?

I have no clue. Mine did the same thing. Was fine for 4-5 months, then lost power every twenty minutes, then every ten, every five, and so bad I couldnt use it anymore. I had to unplug it from the USB port and plug it back in to get it back working. Same thing with the PS2 port. Sometimes I had to reboot because the power wouldnt go back on. Trust me. It's the microsoft mouse.
 
This is an easy fix, it happened to my trackball (the big microsoft one) and i had to cut back the cord from where it entered the mouse and resolder it up with the outisde cable but works great and beats buying a new mouse. my 2 cents
 
Please tell me that you didn't unplug the mouse and plug it back in with the system power turned on! If you did, don't do it again. PS/2 connectors are meant to be connected/disconnected while the system is powered down. You can damage your motherboard by plugging it in while the power is on.

Other than that, I'd bet it's the cable as well. Try to make sure that the mouse is always set up in such a way that you don't have to pull on the cable while using the mouse. Try to have some slack cable available on the desktop. If you are constantly pulling on it, you can cause the wires inside to break.
 
I had this problem a little over a year ago and with the help of google discovered that microsoft had recalled the mice real quiet like. At that point all they required you to do was send them a scan of the bottom of the mouse and if it was one of the recalled ones they would send you a replacement. personaly i'd switch to a MX510 and avoid the hassle.
