can i mount the Antec EA650 with the big fan either up or down? if i mount it down, inside the case, then the cable bundle is in the back of the case and the specs plate is right side up and in front, which is how i figure its supposed to go. however, if i mount it with the big fan on top (id have to cut a hole in my case) then those will be the wrong way, but the switch and plug on the back will be facing the right way. is either way "correct" or does it have to be one way?

What case are you using?
What do you mean by "the switch and plug on the back will be facing the right way"?
What specs plate are you talking about?

But generally, with PSU bottom mounted, you can have the PSU in either orientation as long as there's enough airflow/cooling for the PSU.

well thats why im asking. i have a top mounted psu. it doesnt have a hole for the psu fan on top. i used to have a psu that had an intake fan on the side opposite the side with the plug. and about the switch and the plug on the back, compared to my old psu and my brothers psu and the "typical" orientation, if i mount it with the big fan on top then the plug and switch will be right side up, but the plate that says the voltages and wattages etc will be on the back side of the case, upside down.

if they can be mounted either way then i will mount it with the big fan inside the case. there show be enough air flow i think, especially since im upgrading from a poor 430W to a 80+ 650W. it shouldnt be working very hard. i just wanted to make sure that the orientation wouldnt mess anything up inside the psu.

If you mount it with the fan on top you should definitely cut out a hole so the fan can draw in some fresh air. It does not matter how you mount the PSU as long as you dont have the fan blocked. It will work any way you position, just keep it from over heating.

Why not just mount it like your 430 is mounted?

Orientation does not matter, as long as their is room for air flow.

because the 430 had an intake in the back, not on top. i mounted it upside down with the big fan inside the case and it seems to work ok. might cut a hole in the top and turn it over sometime in the future if i have time.

The fan "in the case" is the air intake. The fan "on the back" "outside" blows out the hot air, it is the exhaust.

True 99%+ of the time.

In a case with a top-mounted PSU, the unit should be mounted so that the fan is facing downwards and is not obstructed. It sounds like that is how you have it now, so if that is the case, it is installed properly and should be left as it is.
