Mounting Drives Sideways.

Is it ok to mount hard drives sideways. Or even upside down. does this shorten the drives life span in anyway? thanks.
 
I'm extremely interested in this question too... anyone know?

I would think it's not supposed to be that way, since I never see HDs in computers mounted sideways to conserve space.

I do have one computer on its side right now.
 
If you look in the official manual for the harddrive most all will allow vertical mountings but there are recomendation as far as airflow goes when you do this.
 
Running it sideways is perfectly alright, i've got 2 raptors sideways and have had them like that for about 9 months and havent had any problems. The drives will work perfectly like this so dont worry bout it.

As for upside down, i wouldnt think it would matter too much though i've heard it isnt recomended as you can just put them the right way up lol (This is probalby because the heat is designed to rise in a specific way. When sideways, the dissipation is more less normal [like a normal pc's HSF] but upside down it could trap heat and over time could end up being detrimental to the drive). Just imagine running a passively cooled CPU upside down with all the heat going up into the CPU as opposed to outwards heh, same deal.
 
I wondered this as well. The reason why you would want to mount upside down (as I wanted to do this last week) is: You have a HD cage that fits 2 drives but the 2 drives are so close together that you don't think there is enough airflow between them. So you mount one upside down which gives about a 1/4 inch of space for air to flow between.

Someone in a thread last week said to not do it so I changed it around.

I've seen many mounted sideways so that probably isn't an issue.
 
check the FAQ section of the manufacturer's website.
Basically, all drives can be placed on their sides. Some can even be placed on their end (like the end where the cables come out) without any issues nor shortening of their lifespan.
It is not recommended they be at any sort of angle. Just make sure they are level with the ground and are perfectly flat angles the side- perpendicular (90 degrees) from the ground/bottom of the case - and the case is on a flat surface.
 
back in the bad old days of stepper motors it was a no no
but a modern voice coil drive could care less, you can format them in any position and then alter the orientation, which back when wasnt a good idea

A stepper motor has no way to compensate for expansion or contraction of the disk:

Older hard disks that used stepper motor actuators were much more sensitive to orientation. It was in fact often recommended that the low-level formatting of the disk always be done after the disk was installed in its operating position, to avoid any shifting of the location of the tracks that might be caused by changing the orientation. Since hard disks today are much more solidly built, and they use voice coil actuators for dynamic head positioning, this really is not an issue. A modern hard disk can be side-mounted in the case without any problems, and can also have its orientation changed after it has been in use for some time.

of course these days all low level formatting is done at the factory, with modern areal density irs simply not an end user possibility any more, "fake" low level formatting being simply zeroing the HDD not writing sectors, tracks and servo bursts

what will increase the lifespan of a HDD is lack of impacts (even small taps when operating), lack of vibration, stable power, lower temperature, and less thermal stresss (the total range of temperature change it goes through) as well as optimizing the filesystem and data locations so the arm isnt thrashing around like a chicken with it head cit off all the time :p
