Mounting a hard driver upside down?

I was putting together my new system and after installing windows and drivers and what not I noticed that my hard drives were getting very hot, just touching the casing of the hard drive is enough to make you pull your hand away.

In my case I have two HDD's mounted right on top of eachother, as there is not anywhere else to mount them. They are mounted in such a way that there is barely any room at all between them, and I believe this is what's causing them to get so hot.

Now if I mount one of the drives upside down this seperates them a good deal, about an inch and a half, and they stay much cooler. But I'm concerned if this will damage the upside down mounted drive. Does anyone know if there is any danger in doing this? Thanks.

WD drives will function normally whether they are mounted sideways or upside down (any X, Y, Z orientation). Of course, the physical design of your system may limit the positions in which the drive can be mounted. However, in all cases, you should mount the drive with all four screws for good grounding. Also ensure that there is enough air space around the drive for adequate air flow, and avoid mounting the drive near sources of excessive heat (such as some CPUs)."

Drive mounting was only an issue on very old HDDs that used stepper motors to move the heads along the platters. With those drives, you could usually mount them however you wanted, but once it was formatted, you couldn't move it since the head might wind up hitting a different portion of the platter than it thinks it's at.


These days HDDs use sensors on the heads to see special tracks on the platter (and some other methods too) to determine where the head is at any time. As such, it can correct itself if it's a bit off... so mounting position has absolutely no effect. If you want to hang it by one corner of the drive and run it, you can.
