First, let me state [H] has the best Case and Case Modding forum of any site on the web so that's why I'm coming here for ideas. I want the ultimate air cooling case and cost is really not a huge concern. I've narrowed it down to one of the MM cubes or the TJ09 as one of my major criteria is having a removable tray. I'm one of those that believe that next to the PSU the case is the second single most important option in a system. TIA!
 
Have you looked at the Lian Li PC-A16?

If you're deadset on either one, you'll just have to consider how big of a footprint you want the case to leave.

Personally, I'd go for the Silverstone though, I don't see a need for a cube unless you've got a big watercooling/phase system.
 
Silverstone TJ-09, no contest. Not quite sure why anyone would want to put their PC in something that looks like a borg cube.

I beg to differ there pal. Love my MM Opti, huge and dont ever have to worry about upgrades bc it can handle it, plus it doesnt have to look like a boring cube if you put some thought into it. I say MM.

I wouldn't call it 'boring', i said 'borg' as in star trek bad guys who fly around assimilating people in massive cubes (correct me if i'm wrong, i'm not really a trekkie). Each to their own i guess. It'd be a pretty boring place if we all liked the same thing :D

I know wa u meant, lol. Just some peeps looks at it as a boring cube, but with imagination and creativity, this case is amazing. cheers
 
I'm lovin' my Mountain Mods U2-UFO Opti 1203, but understand not everyone likes the cube look. Advantage to the MM case is lots of room/flexibility. Disadvantage ... you need some room in your workspace, as the footprint is larger.

yer id have to go with the mountain mods case to.. i recon its one of the coolest cases around
 
I like MM, but their quailty is utter crap. $400 for 15lbs of aluminum, and a horrible paint job. I will never buy another one, not unless I have them custom build it. But then its just to damn expensive. Go for it if you want room to upgrade.

I have never owned a TJ09, so no comment there.

I had heard that the powder coating was really good, I guess everyone has a n occasional bad experience. Was it delivered that way? MM wouldn't fix it or give you a refund?
 
For those of you that own an MM full size cube and don't use casters, what feet are you using?

The case had the "orange peel" effect. Ugly as hell, from what I understand all of their cases are like that.

Oh and the case comes with locking rollers.
 
If you want something that more people will "wow" over (like non geeks) then go for the MM case, that thing just makes the pc look like its badass. However, I personally would go with the tj09, I think it looks very sharp and the quality is second to none.
 
If you don't like powder coat then you could have always bought a brushed unit for $270 and painted it yourself. I personally prefer powder coat to other finishes as it's much more durable.
 
I like the color black. I "assumed" that if I am paying $400 for a case it would be really nice. No orange peel, comes with a broken window.... But If I ever buy another one, I will paint it myself.

If I can get ahold of a camera, most def...but just need one to take the pic lmao... Thats why I still didnt post my rig and my setup yet and its bc of that reason, really no use for one besides that haha.
 
For that amount of money they could have anodized it black. Looks far superior to powder coating and, if its done right, is as durable or even more so.
If you polish the aluminium beforehand you get a perfect mirror finish. Look at the Soldam Windy cases, they anodize them in all sorts of crazy colors.
400 Dollars for such a cuby thingy is way too much, about 50% overpriced at least.
I mean, look at this:

That one costs about 200 Euros as a big tower, and that´s a full tower airbrush which is way more expensive and complicated to do than simple powder coating or anodizing. The tower itself is the least expensive thing there, probably about 1/4th of the total price.

Powder coating 4 rims for my car costs me about 70-100 Euros over here and I may choose whatever color I like.
So why are the MM cubes that expensive?

Buy a TJ09, get it coated in whatever color you like. You will have a case the price of a MM, but way cooler and more unique.

This is what I mean about peeps just looking at it as a cube. Your not just paying for the paint, but for the quality of the thing. It is very well made and hell of a case bc of it.

Dont know how you paid like ~$150 USD to paint all 4 rims too, here it cost lot more, I know bc I only wanted to paint lil on my 18"s on my TB...lol.

Again every case has potential, its up to the user to make it MORE unique and "WAY cooler" than others. cheers

They do powder coating because it's cheap and it's easy to do in-house... it's also a clean and simple solution.

But I agree, the cost is way too much for something that has been powdercoated.

$150 is reasonable for powdercoating. The cost comes into play when it involves stripping the old paint or if it involves any more additional manhours for other services (rust, chrome, etc etc). You can get a powdercoating kit for under $200 and do one hell of a job yourself... all you need is a big enough oven for whatever you need to bake.
 
yea, the 70 Euros quote was for rims which had already been sandblasted and stripped of all other paint or dirt.
The oven thing is the problem, but again, not quite that much when you have heavy industries in the area where people have access to autoclaves (is that how they are called in english too?).

anyway, even if I as a private person would go out and buy the material needed to assemble an aluminium case like that and then go out and send it to a company for powdercoating I will be able to get it made for the same amount of money.
(speaking of a case the same size etc)
Ofcourse, it all depends on several things, p.ex. if you have access to the neccessary tools to make clean cuts and bend the aluminium into the forms you want.
Though I would prefer countersunk screws for a cleaner look, and maybe rounded corners (easy to do because every "Baumarkt" (home depot) here carries aluminium prefab rods of different styles with click-in connectors, slightly expensive but very time-saving).

And, after all, the MM case still IS a cube. Maybe a cube with more fan holes than most (giving it an unneccessarily uneven look imho), but still a cube.
Like the Mac cube. Like the Chenbro cube. Like the wood cube case I made myself years ago.
And for being a cube case it´s utilitarian, but fugly.
Now the Hypercube casemod, THAT´s a hoopy cube! Made by a real frood for sure, that guy knows where his towel is.


Oh, and a warning regarding Ockie´s last statement.
Don´t bake powder coated things in your home oven if you want to use if for food ever again!
The smell... the horror, the horror...
 
I will be painting my next case... Im thinking of a heavily modified cosmos. MM is just to expensive for what you do get. I mean NO fans, NO fan grills, NO 5.25" bay covers, NO hdd racks...... I mean come on! I made my own hdd rack for about $5, saved me about $15.

But its all good, I learned something. They are to expensive (period)
