I was going to attempt the Project PowerMac G5/X86 done by Mr Bean. In his mod he used aluminium as a motherboard tray since the standoffs differed on the G5. I had some trouble finding an aluminium sheet at my local hardware store but I did find a steel sheet instead.... so basically I was wondering if its alright to use steel as a motherboard tray instead of aluminium? Are there any cons to it? Will it effect the system performance at all? (I don't see how it could but thought I should ask to be safe) Thanks in advance.
 
If you don't mind buying online, you can get Al sheet's from onlinemetals. They have a few different alloys, depending on what strength/weight you'd like to achieve, and you can get it custom cut to any size you want.
 
Steel is harder to cut. It has absolutely nothing to do with system performance.
 
All I know is that boards give off some sort of magnetic waves, etc and I didn't know if certain metals would affect whatever it is they do. Thanks.
 
My post up there was a joke. If you guys have a welding shop in your city, go there, they would be glad to give you some scraps.
 
The other option might be to find an inexpensive ($10-20) case online and gank it's tray. Thats what i have done. you just needto dremel out the rivits and boom a nice fitting tray.

won't affect your performance at all. They used to (and still do) make cases and trays out of steel
 
No, I swear that the magnetic waves will uneven the silicon and give you worse FPS and OC. Cheack the benchmarks! Nah, why would you think that steel would give off magnetic waves and give you less performance. Use common sense. Just buy a generic case off of newegg.com.

I never said that steel gives off magnetic waves - I said the board does. I just wasn't sure if certain metals acted in different ways to the waves. Please read my post before you act like I don't have common sense.
