Motherboard, RAM, or OS?

From my sig, I just upgraded to a P4P800, P4 2.8C, and twin sticks of 512MB Mushkin PC3500 DDR Level II.

The RAM is supposed to be 2-2-2. If I let the mobo set the speeds itself, it sets them a lot higher and boots normaly. If I set them manualy in the mobo settings to what they're supposed to be, I get a BSOD when I try to boot into XP.

So my question is, is the trouble with the motherboard, the RAM, or is this just XP's fault somehow?

Judging from the fact that latency timings are adjusted in the BIOS, I would venture to say that your motherboard is to blame. You know, not every product that comes from a company is 100% perfect. Failure happens in the production of said goods.

I've heard several problems with the Asus brand of motherboards, so it's not far fetched. I would try the RAM on another spare motherboard, if you have one.

I can't stress it enough, test, test, test!

The RAM's SPD (serial presence detect) chip is not set to 2-2-2-6 by Mushkin because of compatibility (if they set if to 2-2-2) and it was used in a mobo where you can't set the VDIMM, that user would be screed. You have to set them yourself for the optimum timings.

Also, the reason you get BSOD is probably because you're not giving enough voltage to the RAM. The default VDIMM is 2.5V I think. Bump it to 2.6 or 2.7.

Scratch that. It just crashed. I dunno... I set the voltage to 2.85, and it's still crashing on me. And even if I let the mobo set the latency, I still can't boot at the default 2.55.

This is annoying.
