motherboard raid 5 question

I currently have my motherboard setup doing raid 1 for my data drive(My OS is on a separate raptor). I plan on adding another hard drive and rebuilding the data into a raid 5.

I have read the many arguments about raid 5 on the motherboard but I can not afford a couple hundred dollar card at the moment.

I have all drives on the computer backed up daily by the windows home server. So I am thinking that I might be able to slide with the motherboards raid 5 knowing I can rebuild it anything were to happen like the motherboard crapping out.

What is everyone's thoughts? Am I playing with fire or is my calculation of risk within means?

as long as you have a reliable backup ... go for it..

though.. I wonder, what do you need so much redundancy for? You already said you have a home server, which from what I understand can do it's own version of backups rather well, so why the need for a raid 5?

I am under the assumption that you need a third drive since you're running out of available space, in which case, why don't you get an external hard drive equal to the capacity of the drives should you take them out of raid 1 and backup to that?

if you're really bent on raid 5.. go for it. Just make sure your backup on your server is up to date!

The need for redundancy and up time is from my wife, who run's a little photo business out of our house. I can not fathom the depths of pain I would endure if I lost the wedding pictures of one of my wife's clients, both from her and the bride.
