Hello,

I am working on purchasing a new system and I don't use SLI or Crossfire so I was looking for the best motherboard to purchase without these features. Would I be better off just purchasing a new board with SLI or Crossfire even though I will never use it or would it be better to just buy the best board out there with only one PCIEX16 slot? Thanks.

Simply look for a board you like regardless of how many PCIe 16x slots it has. Just because it's SLI or Crossfire ready doesn't mean you need to use two cards.

Once you find a board you like the looks and price of, read some reviews for it..

What do you plan on doing with this board? Are you going to overclock your processor? If so, and you are not worried about SLi, then go with an intel chipset. The nVidia chipsets are not Quad Core friendly when it comes to overclocking.

Well even with many P35 boards you'll still probably end up with more than one PCIe x16 slot. Though it won't have the full 16 PCI-Express lanes available to it. With X38 boards you will always get more than one PCI-Express x16 slot. That's not a bad thing. There are things besides video cards that can use them.

In any case I'd avoid non-Intel chipset based boards completely if possible. Since you don't need or want SLI you can certainly avoid them.

I will be using this motherboard for my main rig but I never use SLI or Crossfire as I don't see the need for it. I play the odd high intensive games here and there but don't play them religiously. I won't be overclocking so that doesn't concern me. I was just curious what the best board I could get with Firewire, Gigabit Lan, Good Sound, at least one PCI-E16x slot and a few PCI slots. It would need to beable to handle a q9450 which is the new penryn quad core. I also only use Nvidia graphics cards. Thanks.

What would be your price range? Most motherboard today come with 2 pci-e slots x16 but you can use one card. Currently I'm using an abit ip35 pro which has 2 pcie slots and I am only using one, and probably am going to only use one for the rest of its lifetime. I also recommend the abit ip35 pro to :) Great mobo :D, haven't heard the onboard sound as I use an Audigy 2zs so I can't comment on that, but it's very reliable, great for OC'ing (even though you aren't, how can you resist :p), and it has debug LED on the mobo to find out what's wrong.
