Motherboard onboard raid question

Regarding this motherboard:

Does the onboard raid card apply to all 8 sata 2 ports? or just the two purple ports? Was planning to buy this chipset based on the idea of running 4 SATA HDD's in raid 5, while using the purple ports for my raptor drive and a sata optical drive.

6 ports are through ICH9R and 2 are through Gigabyte SATA2. So, yes, you're plan will work, but you'll need pata optical drives or another sata controller card for them if they're sata, too, hehe.

Sorry I meant to say i'll be using 6 500GB drives in raid 5, and then the remaining two purple ports were for the raptor and optical drive.

Shit, my bad, I misread your original post, too, lol... but yah, it'll still work. 6 are through ICH9R, so that leaves the other two free for your raptor and optical, through the gigabyte sata2 controller.

Looking forward to this build (not the cost) but it helps saving a few hundred on a decent external raid controller. Can't wait for those quad cores to get priced down!
