Motherboard, memory, client, and hsf question

1) What is a nice little motherboard to OC a Q6600 to 3.6GHz with? In the Chimp Challenge Official thread some one said this will be folding a 3.6GHz quad. Quick check on newegg on what board that is: this mobo

2) Also, does the amount of ram affect ppd? (1GB/2GB/4GB?)

3) Also, is there a SMP client that can be run of a USB flash drive or an optical disk? Or is the only way through Windows on a harddrive?

4) Are there any shorter heatsinks that can cool a 3.6 Q6600? How is Scythe's Mini Ninja?

EDIT: 5) Will using the onboard video affect the OC much? Or should I pick up a cheap discrete video card?
 
Any P35 Mobo is a good start Abit is my Fav, followed by Gigabyte and MSI
A-data and Corsair memory runs cool and cheap several deals had 2gb under $40
Thermalright Ultra Extreme aka TRUE

I've got 9 quads with the above and hardly ever a problem.

Using onboard video can sometimes lower the max FSB. It depends on the board. It's a good idea to have a spare video card anyway.

Always check the good deals thread, I usually post p31 and p35 boards on the cheap:D

I would stay away from the G31 and G33 boards for the moment...a lot of reviews claim they are not good overclockers...if at all

Ram doesn't affect ppd, however, single channel vs dual channel does. Make sure you use identical sticks and that the board supports dual channel

Frostytech.com has a great deal of reviews on heatsinks + charts that compare them to others. The Scythe Mini Ninja is comparable to the Intel Stock Pentium D HSF

Definitely get a cheap PCI card/cards - again check the post good deals thread ;)
 
Just to throw in a little un-solicited advice, power supply is going to be pretty important here too. You may already have some good ideas on this, and if so, just ignore this.

A good power supply is important for folding though, because unlike most systems, we are running 100% 24/7. An inefficient power supply is not as big of a deal if you are just a user that plays games a couple hours a week but mostly allows their computer to sit idle or even turned off. An 80+ power supply by a reputable manufacturer will save you electricity, add reliability, and save some heat generation from the room your computer is located in.

Hehehe I have 9 of those PSU's so that has to say something... Either I know what I'm doing or I'm really stupid... /shrug you figure it out! :)

 
Sunin, did you ever compare wattage with those Earthwatts compared to your own ones? I posted my results with going 80-PLUS but I don't think you ever let us know if the change was worth it.


 
I can say this... My power bill went from 220 with the non earthwatts to 200 last month and that was going from 7boxes to 9 boxes and converting the remaining over to earthwatts... only 1 of my 9 boxes has a psu other than earthwatts. Its a silverstone 1kw for my gaming machine. My 9th and 10th are in a box waiting to be made into my 10th quad and the 10th earthwatts is a spare for any issues that arise! :)

End results I'm saving $40 a month by running more efficient PSU's!
 
Ah yes 80+ PSU, would never buy anything less then that these days.

Go in the SFF forum on here, there is an Asus G33 or G35 board that could OC to a 550bus or something...

Mini Ninja = Pentium D heatsink? That can not be right...
 
Asus G35 = p5E-VM HDMI ;)

Own one and it's a great overclocker, used as a HTPC/Folding box.

$200 a month!?!? WOW! That's high! I have a 3 bedroom, 2 1/2 bath house with a garage and basement (not to mention a 6 year old daughter that likes to turn on every light in the house) and our bill never goes above $120!

9 x 175watts = 1575 Kwh per month

I used 1879Kwh last month so 304 Kwh are for fans, entertainment system, washer/dryer, lights, etc.

Before folding I ran between 30-50 a month in electricity.. its only 600sqft of condo space...

 
600sqft is small... just 1 bedroom ?

Mine is 1100 sqft but I hope the things I did for efficiency pay off so I can run a nice farm without breaking the bank like yours. My limit is 1 KWH for folding ;)

LOL studio.. with a walk in closet the size of a small room... Never understood that design.. but whatever it make a very nice mini data center :p

Yeah 6x100 watts is definitely less than 9x175 :p

Also, the cost of power in Chicago is prob more than it is in Delaware
