Motherboard ECC RAM Compatibility

I also posted this in the memory forums but I think this might be a better question here:

How do I know if my motherboard is compatible with ECC RAM? I am not talking about Registered Memory, as I know that has different motherboard requirements.

But will ECC DDR RAM work with any motherboard that accepts regular DDR RAM or does your motherboard need to explicity support ECC RAM?

Reason I am asking is that I might be able to get some ECC DDR RAM real cheap, I just don't know if it will work with my motherboard. I can't find anything in my manual or online regarding it *not* working.

Thanks!

I've seen some motherboards manage to bootup using ECC when someone put it in by mistake...even when those motherboards weren't workstation or server mobo's...so didn't support ECC. Guess they worked...just didn't use the extra parity of ECC.

And I've seen other motherboards that don't support ECC...flat out refuse to bootup.

So guess trying some cheap RAM that isn't specifically approved and stated as compatble with your system...follows the usual risk.

Hmm, I think I'll pass on the ECC RAM then. I don't want to get it (even if it is a good deal) and not have it work.

Thanks!
