Hey there folks. I'm currently buiding a custom case and I have seen a few mods where they have built those snazzy motherboard covers out of perforated metal. I'm planning on doing this to my case, but I'm stuck trying to figure out how they attached the motherboard covers. Today I picked up a 3' x 5' sheet of 20ga galvanized perforated sheet metal for this project which luckily only cost me $2.

you could use threaded metal rods that are the same gauge as montherboard mounting screws, that go all the way to the motherboard tray.

screw the rods into the mobo tray holes, drop some evenly-cut spacers onto them to support the weight of the mobo, then use some more spacers on the rods on top of the mobo, then put on your mobo cover, and top the rods off with some nice decorative/polished/chromed dome-cap nuts. voila! securely mounted mobo with cover.

alternatively, you could put some regular nuts/washers onto the rods to tighten down onto the mobo before putting the top spacers on, if you want to secure it a little more. then finish up as above.
 
Hey, thanks for the reply! I read your post, ran down to Lowes real quick and got 2 3-foot long pieces of 6-32 threaded rod, some matching nuts and washers. Plus to cap off the threaded rods above the motherboard cover, I got some brass knurled nuts, the same thing DangerDen uses in the mounting hardware for its Maze4GPU waterblocks.

Kinda-sorta like yours. The mesh I got will go over the front of the motherboard with cut-outs for the PCI slots I will be using, the AGP slot, RAM, CPU, NB & transistor heatsinks, PS connections and IDE connections. I'll be painting the mesh gunmetal grey. :)

there was that acrylic case, all sorts of crazy, he had the motherboard cover done in chrome....

yeah i know what you mean, looks sweet, i want to do it.
 
nice! what are you going to use for spacers between the mobo and tray and mobo and cover?

post pics of the results!
 
I'm planning one using small sections of small diameter brass tubing to be the spacer between the motherboard and the motherboard cover. I'll get the brass tubing at a local hobbie store. :)

Yeah, definitely a mess of cords, but it's still a very enthusiastic and nice mod, IMO. I don't know, messy cords don't reall bother me-as long as their at least covered by something...preferably an actual sleeving of sorts, and not something like aluminum foil!

Yup, straight from another thread :p you catch on! ;) LOL. Yeah, I've heard that auto tubing does the trick...might try it next round.
 
I don't use it much (rather hide the cables) but the chrome stuff reflects nicely.

Yea, I'm using the chrome split loom in my current case. However, in the case I'm currently modding I shall just use regular black sheathing. Here is an internal pic of my current computer...

This picture is almost a year old though. Now I'm using a ThermalRight SLK-900a with a Zalman 92mm fan on it instead of the Coolermaster Aero 7+ and I have an ATI 9800pro instead of the eVGA 5700Ultra.
