most new dells models using 16ms. why?

I heard speculation that they were just being more conservative with their response times.

Perhaps so Dell can change the LCD panel used without updating specs.

For instance the Dell 2007fp started out with the new S-IPS panel from LG, which had better specs than listed. But Dell later changed it to a cheaper S-PVA panel without notice to customers.

The specs are written in such a way that they will be accurate whichever panel Dell uses.

Many LCD"S are 16ms

what is 8ms, or 6ms is grey to grey, but black to white and back is often 12ms +

some 16ms panels dont have ghosting.

The standard for measuring response times is an absolute joke. It is meaningless! There is no way to get an accurate idea of how well an LCD will perform, except to try it out.

True. The listed specs are all crap (as are the online "reviews"). Best way is to see it for your self or ask someone who has no interest in misrepresenting facts (on these forums for instance). I have a 1704FPT that has listed 24ms response and has *no* ghosting/blurring at all in fast games. I also have a 3007WFP that has a 16ms listed time (I think) that has no appreciable amount of ghosting in fast games. On the other hand my laptop's TN panel blurs like you wouldn't believe it despite the 32 ms listed time.

You can't trust other people opionions for the most part either. Because you will get bunches of people who think anything they were smart enough to buy is perfect.

The dell 2405 is a perfect example. It has one of the worse input lags of any LCD and yet more than half the owners will tell you there is no input lag. It does smear fast action, yet again more than half the owners will insist it is perfect. Do you get the idea?

I think your best bet is to look at behardware compares and their pixerpan photos. About the only decent monitor that really passes muster for ghosting/smearing seems to be that new Nec Widescreen.

Try to buy somewhere with a no questions return policy. Because the bottom line is LCD still is nowhere near as good as CRT for Lag/Smearing/viewing angles/backlighing and in the end only you can tell if it is good enough for you.

I hear ya! The 2405 is the perfect example. It truly blows on more than just lag and you don't get any of that by reading any of its reviews and half of the owners say it's OK. But you should use your better judgement to stay away from a monitor *half* of the people say sucks bad! So these forums are helpful when used properly.

Blurring is in the eye of the beholder. I think the 3007 does blur a tee-wee bit but it's 100% acceptable. The NEC is probably better for gaming as you say but the price of it is...

The best way to find out is to find out what kind of panel the LCD is using and go to the original makers web site.
