I've recently been trying to get every last % point out of my system, while maintaining a low overclock in the sweet summer heat.

So, I was browsing around the BIOS and I saw quite a few esoteric Ram settings (like write refresh time etc.) and was wondering if these have any real effect on performance...

If not, does anyone have any firsthand experience with which of the 4 Major ram timings have the largest effect on performance? I'm gonna bench all the settings when I get some time, but anyone's input would be really welcome. I mean, there are at least 9 things I can change in the A8N-sli DRAM submenu XD

If you consider the system being able to start then yes... ;)

your sig....2.5-3-3-7 @ DDR333.

you are doing pretty well. Most settings are not worth the trouble to play with. Stick to the main 4.
 
post a list of the timings you've got and i'll just might know what effect some of them have :D
 
generaly as far as timmings go the "cas" is the most important. that is the first number people list when saying timmings. there are other important settings with ram too but, as far as timmings go "cas" is #1. difference between cast 2 and 3 on like DDR 3200 is minimal. in a bechmark for memory you will see a clear increase but in games and programs it will be small, like 5%. the nice thing is sometimes you get some cas 3 memory that runs at 2 just fine.

but that 5% is worth 100's of $$ for processor speeds and for memory. getting more for your money is what it is all about. best way is to read a little and just learn from experence. as long as you dont mess with voltages, you run virtually no risk of damaging any hardware.
 
Oh, I never worry about destroying my hardware heh.

I'll do a full set of benchmarks when I get back to my Apartment... I just wish there was some way to save my great overclock profile to a CD or Floppy, so I can easily re-load it after the testing :(.

Oh eclipse, those are the words I've been dying to hear you say :) I'll get a list up in a couple of days.
 
overclocking is different for everyone. two peices of hardware mades seconds apart can overclock differently let alone differnet bands and models. that is why i recommend playing with it. learn what good try it and see if it works.
 
True, but there is a set of standards that hardware must conform to. Cas 2.5 should equate to the same performance on every DIMM module run with the same timings and clock speed.

The potential to change these settings, however is different. This is what I plan on investigating.
 
The most important other than TRP and CAS is your command per clock, ie the 1T, 2T etc. If you can make a command per clock(1T) that will be alot faster than command per 2 clocks(2T). Most DDR memory these days runs at 1T on the other hand i dont believe DDR2 does 1T.
