Most harm PSU can do...

What is the most a PSU can do to your components? Destroy the mobo + gfx + ram+ cpu or a combination of these ? And what is a good tester to test if my PSU is working as it should?? Thanks..

I myself know first hand from just a month ago. I had an OCZ Powerstream blow on me. Took out my motherboard, cpu, 2 hard drives, and dvd-rw drive...but left my ram and video card.

Took about a month to RMA everything and get it all back. 1 hdd wasn't under warranty (fuckin' Maxtor...shoulda looked a lot closer before I bought it), the dvd-rw wasn't under warranty, and neither was the cpu. So I was out the cost of an X2 3800+ (yeah...like I was gonna complain :p ), a hard drive and a dvdrw. So that would be 152 + 75 + 30 = $257 to upgrade a blown system (I did have a 3200+, 160gb PATA, and a POS LiteOn dvdrw. Now I have a X2 3800+, 250Gb SATAII 3Gb/s - Seagate perpendicular w/16mb cache, and an NEC dvdrw drive)

In a way...I'm glad that the psu blew and took everything. I was able to get a decent upgrade for everything and OCZ even sent me a more powerful PSU in replacement. I also didn't want to wait for DFI to RMA my board so I bought an A8N32-SLI Deluxe for $119 off Newegg and it's a dream board...better than my Ultra-D for overclocking.

so yeah...all the horror stories about psu's taking out an entire system...they are true. So buy a quality PSU the first time and you won't have to worry as much ;)

As for a tester, a good DMM would work, but it won't be able to load test your psu, only check the voltages and current for stability. Someone else can point you in the right direction for a good tester.

yea... they sent u a cpu?! And that board really is better than Ultra-D ? I have a Ultra-D board and Enermax Liberty 500W. The reason im worried is that sometimes while my computer is running.. one of the fan or something slows down for a bit then picks up again.. im not sure if its the fan but i still wanna make sure my PSU doesnt mess up my other components.. as i have invested like 2000$ on this pc.. plus i read some reviews on the 630W Liberty in neweg.. lot of those going bad.. so im kinda worried o_o.

Judging from the link in your sig, your PSU has more than enough power and I wouldn't worry about it :)

A shitty psu (eyes powmax and deer suspiciously) can easily take out your entire pc, set your pc on fire, burn down your house, and an entire city block.

Given the right conditions. Like full load, a very power consuming system, for a psu that can't handle it, and given long enough without intervention.

LOL - typo fixed...no OCZ didn't send me a cpu, I meant PSU...damned acronyms :p

As for the A8N32-SLI...yes...it's better than my Ultra-D. It will run my ram stable up to 245Mhz where the Ultra-D would max at 220 - same timings. It also runs my new 3800+ X2 at 2.7Ghz on 1.4v. When I got all the parts in to put my machine back together I tried both the A8N32 and the Ultra-D with the X2 and the A8N32. Both boards ran it stably at 2.7ghz, but the A8N32 ran it at 1.4v where my Ultra-D needed 1.47v-1.5v.

:EDIT: - not to mention that I was able to max out the htt at 400Mhz on this A8N32...something I couldn't dream of doing on that Ultra-D. The Ultra-D (I had anyway) topped out at about 340.

I've heard of PowMax catching fire without having a load. At least not the rated load.

Powmax and Rated load shouldn't, ever, be in the same sentence. They catch fire 50% of the time with just half their rated load

Very true. There's no way a 1.5 pound PSU can be rated 450w, yet PowMax does it. My 500w unit weighs in at 4poiunds (its guts make up 3 pounds of it.)

Weight doesn't mean good, either. You can load up a power supply with fishing weights and dumbells, and still have it perform like crap and have it weigh 35 pounds.

tons of guts also don't make a good psu. Just look at the FSP Epsilon. Minimal guts, tons of power.

I wasn't trying to imply that. Though I guress I did. But when you say a PSU is 450 watts but only has a few caps and a small ass heatsink attached to littly bitty VRs, a very little else, then well you know.

I've seen a few power supplys that caught fire and at least took out the pc and the desk it was under. Also a few years ago we had one catch fire that almost burrned down my friends house. We were able to put out the fire before it did too much damage but the rug was destroyed, hard wood floor under said rug needed to be sanded and restained, wall/celling had to be scrapped down and painted, etc. It was a bitch.

I sw a power supply fry a roach and take out the system with it. Guess that wasn't the PSU's fault as much as it was the tenant's though
