I'm on the mission to find the most comfortable headphones ever. Comfort first, then sound quality :D

I really like the felt ear pads of the Sennheiser HD-555

(My budget is around $100)

Thanks

For my money, it's the Audio Technica ATH series. They've got them open and closed, and at a number of different price points. For $100 I think the ATH-500 are what you are looking at. I like Sennheisers, but they don't compete with the Audio Technicas for comfort.

Headphones are so subjective, you may be better off trying these out in a B&M. E.g. I'll second the Senn comfort comment - easily far more comfortable than say Grados. But then, like anything else, it's a personal preference thing.

Unless there's some bizzare design flaw, light clamp/cloth earpads should all be extremely comfortable.

Nothing even CLOSE to the audio technica a500 a700 design.

Senns clamp hard on my head. They are heavy duty and feel like it.

grados????? L O L to comfort, build design is ancient and clumsy.

AT700 is like a pair of big, fluffly earmuffs with decent air circulation.

I have Senn 595 and have a biggish head too and don't feel any clamping force. They are very comfortable. Only thing is the felt makes my ears sweat on hot days but at least it is not sticky like happens with those headphones with fake leather earpads. Stating the obvious here buit will say it anyway. If you want comfortable full size headphones then the first rule is to only buy circumaural headphones. The kind that sit on top of your ears are never comfortable for more than a half hour of use.
Depending on how much your ears stick out. Mine stick out too much and I used to have a apir of Sony headphones that are supposed to be used by DJ's and they hurt my ears badly after only a half hour of use. Ended up giving them away.

Cool thanks for the responses. I've decided on the Audio Technica ATH AD500

I can't tell from the picture but is it that same fabric ear pad as the Sen 555?

Sounds like a good choice. I have the ATH-A500s, and they have pleather-like stuff. It doesn't pick up dirt as much as fabric seems to. They're also very comfortable---not much clamping force, but they still stay on. The only thing they're not suitable for is walking with them on; the light clamping force means they shift around a lot, so you get a good bit of extra "scrnk-a scrnk-a" on top of the music.

Its got a bigger number.

I recently got ATH-A700s (closed version). They're fucktons comfortable. They don't clamp on to your head, but they stay on just fine. The cups are soft, and the pleather (I think) doesn't match up with felt cups for sure, but they're just fine.

Oh, and I wear glasses.

1)
Which is better. Open or closed?

2)
The AD700 has felt cups. The A700 has pleather. Isn't felt better?

3)
Is the AD500 felt or pleather?

1. Open is usually better. Music generally sounds "airier," more natural, and you get a larger soundstage. Closed headphones, of course, usually offer better isolation.

2. The pleather on the A500 probably helps with bass impact.

3. Felt/velourish material.

Was about to click buy on Sennheiser HD515 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16826106391 , then decided to check any reviews from here and now I am undecided. I wear David-Clark aviation headsets for 8 to 10 hours a day at work regularly, so comfortwise, my ears are so used to being tortured, I doubt any regular consumer headphones will feel uncomfortable to me. So how does the audio-technica ATH-AD700 compare to a Sennheiser HD515 or the HD555 sound quaility? Am not opposed to paying more $$ if it's worth it, but I have problems hearig higher freq's already, which is why I choose HD515 rather then the HD555 (from what I can tell spec-wise, HD555 just hit's slightly higher freqs then HD515)

Guess what? I have tried them all.

The difference is the AT has a broken wedge design on top. Instead of being a two single piece arch over the head, like the senns, hence the clamp, the AT have a single piece and THEN a two piece which allows for a much more "custom" fit. They are lightweight, the opens breath very well so that your ears stay dry. They are deep so there is more sound stage. A greater feeling of depth or realism to the environment of the game.

i have the AD-900 and i dont know why, but it isn't very comfortable for me at the top tip of my ear. perhaps my ear is too long, but a lot of the pressure from the headphone earpieces rests on that part of my ear. if you have smaller ears, i could see why these would be comfortable.

A bit different design and I agree with you. The big cups on the ad500 and ad700, the Open cans, are the most comfortable. The A900s and ad900s it is like the cushion part of the cup has nothing in it. I really have ?s about the 900 series overall anyway.

I prefer Beyer blueberry pads for best cushion comfort. The beyers tend to be pretty heavy and clampy too though.

I think all 3 headphones (DT770, AD700, and HD555) are very comfortable, its only a matter of how you get used to it.

When I first got my AD700, I thought they were they most uncomfortable set of headphones ever made, but that was because the lower part of the ear phone was constantly rubbing with my skin under my ear. At first it was pretty bad. But then either I got used to it, or the headphones adapted to my head. Because they are essentially large earmuff, it tends to get warm after a while.

Of all, I think the DT770 are the most comfortable. They are very well built, and the cups tend to surround your ear, whereas in the AD700 the cushion puts pressure on the edges of your ear.

The HD555, are just too tight overall, and comfort level is similar to the DT770

I guess its different for each person.

my DT880s are super comfortable... any of that top line DT770/880/990 all use the same pads, and they are super comfy...

Yeah beyer pads are the shizness. Too bad the only beyer I like are Darth Beyers. $$$

I've tried the DT880(same pads as the 770), and the HD555, and the Denon D1000's to me are more comfortable than either of them.

One problem with large/loose designs like the d2000 and dt880 is that they like to slip and move around if I tilt my head back to rest, or tilt my head forward to pick something off the ground. I haven't tried the audio technicas, but they may present the same problem as well.
