Ok so this weekend I was at the local BB and saw Morrowind GOTY there for $20, figured I would pick it up because I have always wanted to try it. Well I installed everything and got going on it but feel kinda lost. I dont really know what to do or where to go. I made myself a custom melee character but I keep running into this thing called a Scamp that my weapon attacks have no effect on. I can basically brawl his ass and knock him down at which point I seem to do a bit of damage but he ends up killing me eventually. Is there a good tutorial I can look through or what??? I am not averse to starting a new character if that would help. Thanks and if you have any good mods to make it look better that would be great!.

Also, for the time being I am trying to stay away from game mods, ie interface, map etc but would like something that will increase the graphics if there is one. Is there any essential mods that I would need? Where do I tell what type of a character a mob is and what their health is so I know when they are close to dead, ect. if there is one?

If it's anything like Oblivion, try a silver or magical weapon.

morrowind is a huge frucking game. reading a tutorial/walkthrough or two probably isnt beneath you.

Ok so did some digging around on the ole' net last night and found a few tutorials and guides to get me going. Got a new character started and played him for a short while. Question is though, is there something that I am missing that shows the mobs health (or does the game not let you know)? And how do I actually progress towards a level? I see that you mouse over where it says Level X and it gives me a 0/10 scale. I have killed a few mobs and completed a couple quests but no movement yet? Is actual charact progression in level slow?

you level up by increasing your main skills. when you increase your main skills 10 times your character gains one level, this includes paying for training to increase the skills. It can be any combination of 10 main skills to level up.

Ok so whenever one of my main skills; Long Blade, Sneak, SpeechCraft etc., levels up by 10pts my character will actually level up one level?! Cool, I ended up getting the brotherhood armor because the assassin came and attacked me while I rested. Lucky for me I had potions and a Short Sword that I pulled off some flying guys corpse that had a damage proc on it. Rocked his ass with 4 procs in a row!!!

Now to successfully level a skill up one point do I have to perform the act successfully. IE security will level one point when I pickpocket someone without them knowing or pick a lock? Is that right?

Yeah, successfully performing an action increases that skill level. When any combination of your major and minor skills increase ten times, your overall level increases and your base attributes can be increased.

im assuming youre referring to the wizard that falls out of the sky on the road to hla oad. dont toss or sell those scrolls. they can actually be quite useful if used correctly.

Yeah I kept the scrolls and his blade, sold everything else I think. All I know is that this time I went through and took everything I could without getting caught in the main town, SeyNeen (sp?) and sold it in Balmora. I have taken a few things there but only stuff that I know that I would not be caught. Was actually able to pickpocket a guard, but didnt take his torch for fear of his catching me in the process... When pickpocketing someone if you get into their inventory without them knowing are you scott-free from there? Granted if someone doesnt see you. Also, any advice on mods that would be considered essential? I have not found a list of them anywhere, just lists of mods and utilities....

So an individual skill has to lvl 10pts for me to level one? Or are you saying that I can lvl 3pts in Sneak, 5pts in Long Blade and 2pts in SpeechCraft (=10pts) and I will lvl one level?

Sweet ok so I should be pretty close to lvling because I noticed that one of my skills (sneak I think) was at 7pts. Ok so here's the next part of that question. Do the skills have to be in their respective categories, ie 10pts out of Main, 10pts out of Second, 10pts out of Misc? Or can the skills be mixed say like above but one in main and two in secondary?

Also, real stupid question but how do you change the name of your custom class? Could not figure it out for the life of me and did not see anything in the manual.

Mobs: How do you tell their level, because I found something last night that literally mopped the floor with me when I was running around.

The bigger and meaner it looks, the more likely it is to whoop you ;)

Also, if it's something new you haven't seen before, odds are it's gonna be a higher level creature than the things you've been seeing, especially if you've wandered out farther than you had previously.

yeah true... well there is this one area that I end up going that there is a Scamp that is immune to all weapon attacks so I have to box his ass. Checked on an online directory and said he is immune to all schools and weapons WTF?! So guess I have to box him until he is dead? I was going at it for like 10 mins and couldnt tell if he was close to dying or what.... Bastard thing!

You have to increase your main and minor skills in order to level up. The miscellaneous skills you increase will count toward any bonuses you can add to your base attributes, but they don't contribute to actually leveling up.

As for the scamps, or any other daedric creatures, you'll need silver or daedric weaopns to harm them, or destructive magic. Scamps are the lowest of the daedric enemies, or close to it, so if you're getting your butt kicked by them now, wait until you level up and get some better weapons.

Ok cool thanks... I took Conjuration, so I can summon a Daedric dagger (I think) so I guess I should use that against him... cool beans!!

Keep the info coming guys, trying to learn as much as possible before I get to far into the game..... But I have a feeling I will have to start over again anyways...which reminds me... how do you change you custom class name and does armor type effect sneak negatively? IE will I sneak better in unarmored vs. light vs. medium vs. heavy?

Okay, this should clear up leveling for you.

You have 5 major skills, 5 minor skills, and the rest are miscelaneous skills. Whenever a total of 10 major OR minor skills increase in level, your character will be able to increase in level. This can be any combination of major or minor skills. When this happens the game will tell you that you need to rest and reflect on what you have learned. You then need to find a bed and sleep for any amount of time, when you wake up the level up screen will be presented that lets you choose to increase your base attributes (strength, agility, stamina, etc).

Now, this is a bit more advanced. Each skill is governed by a specific base attribute. For example, sword skill would be governed by strength, most magic schools are governed by intellect, sneak is governed by agility, etc. The character screen will tell you this. If you increase skills of the same governing attribute you will be given bonuses to that base attribute when you level up. Say for example you get 4 increases in skills that are governed by strength, when your character levels up you will be able to add 4 points to strength instead of just one. Likewise for all the others. I believe the maximum bonus is 5. In order to make the most of this you should level 5 skills of one attribute and 5 of another attribute. This will give you a +5 bonus to those attributes when you level, Allowing you to add 10 points to your base skills, which (if I remember) is the most you can possibly add per level.

I don't think there is any greater bargain in PC gaming than Morrowind GOTY at $20.

It's a little cliche, but be prepared to start losing a great deal of time to your alternate life.

Yeah, your probably right, its been a long time

No, what you said made sense, you can do 10 of Main, 10 of Minor or 5 of each and that would give you the combination necessary. Ok I think I am understanding this more now. So I am kinda building a rogue type. I took Personality as my attribute ( I think) and strength and agility as the two below it. I believe I have Long Blade, Sneak, Security, Medium Armor and Conjuration as my mains. Seconds would be Short Blade, stealth, light armor, speech craft and Rejuvenation (I think). So depending on what these each are governed by will give me bonuses when I actually level. Now If I do not got to a bed and rest will that stunt me from leveling to the next level, IE I will not be able to gain any more points in an stealth, sneak, etc? Or can I keep going so I can get 5 bonus of each?

At this point between planning a wedding, finishing my masters and working 8+ hours a day I dont have a life period. I get up, go to work, go home, and sit in front of my computer for another 4+ hours doing homework. I see my fiance' for about an hour or so while we make dinner and play with our dogs, then its off to school work for me. Normally by the time I am done she is asleep or just starting to go to bed.... So much for a life, but it will all be better in December!!!

You can keep increasing skills once you hit the level up point. Sometimes you're in the middle of a dungeon and can't rest for a while. That isn't held against you. I'm not sure how it applies to the attribute bonuses but i'm guessing that any increased skills after the level up point will apply to the next level up.

If you're looking to address one of the bigger issues with Morrowind's visuals, you'll want to grab a mod called Better Bodies, and I also recommend a mod by the same creators, Better Clothes (or Clothing, or something akin to that). Better Clothes will cause some issues with armor clipping and so on, but I feel it's worth it. There are other mods in the "Better" family, made by different authors, such as Better Bottles, and Better Heads, but you might be perfectly content with everything else. Better Heads is a good grab, however.

Another worthy visual mod is Book Jackets, which replaces generic, low-res book covers with unique higher-res artwork. This guy did a similar mod for Oblivion, and it's just excellent work. If you're into this one, grab the set for Tribunal and Bloodmoon, which would pretty much cover every book in the game.

As far as gameplay is concerned, I actually suggest throwing Morrowind's leveling system out the window. On the surface, it seems pretty logical, and it seems like it'd work perfectly, but odds are you'll want to develop your character without "power leveling". The multiplier (and attribute cap) system is really the crux of an otherwise good system. Galsiah's Character Development attempts to fix this. Essentially, it does away with level stair-stepping and multipliers, and attributes are modified directly by skill increases. It also allows for spells (such as Fortify Endurance, for instance) to also affect skills and other attributes (Health, for example). It does slow skill advancement to some degree, so just be aware of that.

You might also try the Unofficial Morrowind Patch, which fixes typos and other issues.

Thanks, I had seen some of these mods on the gamespot website but was not sure which to pick up. There seem to be tons that do all kindsa shit to the game, which is NOT what I am looking for right now. Maybe later when I understand the game better and have logged a number of hours but for the time being I will stick with the "pretty" mods. Are mods hard to install in the game? I remember seeing something about it but cant seem to find it anywhere....

when you run the morrowind launcher, there should be a button called "game files" or samesuch. click it, and a screen will pop up that says you have morrowind.esm, bloodmoon.esm, and tribunal.esm installed (assuming you have no mods yet; a check box with an x through it denotes installed files). this screen functions as a kind of proprietary mod manager. when you download a mod and put it in your morrowind directory, a new line should pop into this screen. just click the check box and your mod should work fine.

Some mods, especially texture replacement mods, don't put a line in that mod manager, so don't be worried if you don't see it in there. But the Book Jackets and Better Heads/Bodies mods do put an entry there.

Ok cool thanks guys. I think that when I get the chance I will download the "Better" family and then see what other texture, sight distance mods there are out there. Seems like the game has been around long enough that it has a lot to offer. Pretty fun so far, found out that I can pretty much steal anything as long as no one is around. Odd thing is that there are times where I cannot sneak? Why is that? I understand that if someone is near me and they have seen me I cannot sneak but other times there can be no one around and I cant do it?
