New York’s Attorney General has announced that a total of 15 major websites have agreed to use the Electronic Securing and Targeting of Online Predators Act to get rid of registered sex offenders.

To date, twelve of these Web sites; AOL’s Bebo.com. Google’s Orkut.com, Yahoo!’s Flickr.com, BlackPlanet.com, Classmates.com, Flixster.com, Fotolog.com, hi5.com, MyLife.com, Stickam.com, and Tagged.com, have agreed to use e-STOP data from the state to find and disable accounts linked to registered sex offenders. Imeem.com was recently bought by MySpace and will also purge its network of New York Sex Offenders. Multiply.com, which did not receive a letter, has also requested the e-STOP data.

What's worse - being a murderer, or getting that bit flagged to say you'll eat everyone's children and for some odd reason you need a red bullseye hooked up to GPS so everyone can find out if they want to? As someone else has pointed out - chances are they already did their time in jail - so now we banish them for eternity? This is getting out of hand. This looks good on paper, but the reality is people get f'd.

They came for the homeless but I wasn't homeless so I did nothing. They came for the murderers but I wasn't a murderer so I did nothing. They came for the "sex offenders" but I wasn't one so I did nothing. They came for me - there was no one to defend me, now I can't use the internet.

Sex offenders are treated worst than murders. I would also like to see some updated "How to catch a predator" shows.

We need a better definition of "sex offender", as it is now it includes a lot of people that simply don't deserve to be labeled as such.

yep in some places you can be 18 and have sex whit a 17 year old and bam your now a sex offender. only people that have raped or abused kids should be on it. we should all so have the bad parent club where if you get on it they chop your balls off!

While I applaud the intentions behind this, I cannot say I support it. Unfortunately too many states have very cryptic laws that lend themselves to abuse and are abused. While I agree that the overwhelming majority of sex offenders are dirtbags and deserve whatever treatment society gives them, there are some that simply got screwed. A case and point, a guy I knew in high school had been dating this girl for several years. He was a year older then her and her parents hated him. Naturally the two had been having sex for a while. Literally the day he turned 18, her mother pressed statutory rape charges against him. Here in Ga, you can do that and bar the supposed "Victim" from testifying. The mother did that and he got 10 years in prison for it. It was a complete abuse of the system, and he got his life ruined due to it.

My perspective is, if it happened to one person there are easily many more. While I would love to be in support of something like this..I simply can't.

Her daughter should have clawed her mother's eyes out.

In another article of the same subject:
With this bill, New York’s children will have the most comprehensive protections against sexual predators on the Internet in the nation.

Right. As if even a small percentage of sex crimes happen online. From what I've read so far, most of these crimes happen right in the home and are committed by family members/close friends.

Maybe they should start setting up surveillance systems in ANY home that meets the following conditions:

-There is at least one person over 18 living in a household and:
-There is at least one minor in the same household.

OR

-There is at least 1 minor living in the same neighborhood as any amount of people over the age of 18.

I mean, better to be safe than sorry, amirite!?!

This would be a great idea if it were "online predators" and not the more generic "sex offender."

Many sex offenses have nothing to do with the Internet, and some have nothing to do with children at all.

This New York Attorney General guy thinks he runs the whole frakking country.

OMG thats horrible!! crap like that shouldnt be allowed period! Im all for protecting the children(i have a 8 year old son myself) but it seems like we are turning into the nanny state when it comes to stuff like this. Sadly it seem our "elected officials" preferr more votes than take care of the core matters and use reasonable thinking.

Seems pointless to me having this law. All they have to do is create a new email address and make a new account.

RSOs generally have their computer time (as with most other things,) supervised. Creating a false profile for an RSO is a big no no. They get into deep trouble if they get caught doing it.

You're looking at this the wrong way. If people are getting labeled as sex offenders unfairly, then the laws that allow it to happen need to change. In this case the state's rules of evidence and trial procedure created an unjust result. Reforming those laws to weed "innocent" people out of the sex offender pool doesn't require lightening the punishment of sex offenders.

I think it says a lot about you if the only people willing to speak up for you are homeless, murderers, or sex offenders.

Yeah, but then there would be so few people relative to how "widespread" they claim the "problem" to be that everybody would suddenly wonder if any of this crap was even worth it.

Too many people make huge paychecks on the issue for that to happen.

And the worst thing about it is, all this does is give everybody using these services a false sense of security. Yet, still, the vast majority of occurrences will be from people who either don't have a record, or are crafty enough to lie when they sign up. Instead of really stopping anything, they'll just block a ton of people who wouldn't have been trying to do anything to anybody just for political gain.

Yeah, and the fact that they are completely ostracized from society and practically banned from social interaction of any kind with other humans online and off, lends them to really give a shit about that.

I just don't get how basically shoving RSOs off the deep end psychologically is supposed to keep them from re-offending. Unless the point is to CAUSE them to re-offend or go insane and start killing people, just to perpetuate the justification.

Exactly.

Not to mention the fact that oh you know, they might snag an open wifi hotspot somewhere to do any of this?

This money could and should be better spent teaching children in schools how to be safe online. Teaching those we truly deem at risk how to spot warning signs and how to be cautious when dealing with strangers.

Obviously some will chime in and say this is "the parents job" but obviously that fails.

I would rather we drive RSO out of our communities. Oh wait we are. I find this to be fantastic. We now have both the community members rallying to persecute these deviants and large corporations getting involved. Hopefully the only place for these scum bags is their own little communes in the middle of no were until we can jail them permanently or execute them. Child rape has never been tolerated by any society.

Umm Reading comprehension comes into play here. Not all sex offenders are child rapists. Actually read the thread, then rethink what you said. Then maybe try again?

I know that. I also have zero tolerance for them either. Sex offenders are scum. I could care less to the actual form or law broken. Need any more clarification? Good. The laws are in my views favor and will not be changing any time soon. Actually expect them to get more harsh for the offenders. They can all complain elsewere.

in extreme cases, the victim of rape must live an entire life in shame, embarrassment and solitude. i have no problem is the criminal must pay the same price. in many cases, rape is much worse then just being killed.

the problem is those grey cases, especially the weak cases where they get 18 year old dudes for makin out with a 16 year old girl. i know a guy who was 18 and she was 17, he ate her out and her parents found out (thought they had sex). short story even shorter, he's a sex offender for life now and was never a guy who would rape anyone. whats even scarier, what if he was the type who might rape? what would stop him now, he's already on the list so what does it matter?

i think its the same as many laws are trying to go. zero tolerance blanket prosecution. people should be IRATE about this type of behavior from our governments, but im on the global stage in GRID so i gotta go.... im already ranked #1 in the game!

Nothing quite more destructive than actually helpful than "zero tolerance" laws. Good for the publicity though.

So then people like Hope Witsell fall under the "scum" category in your view. Wile I think that we should have an RSO registry, there needs to be a change in what an RSO is. To be honest, everyone should be able to make one mistake, pay their debt to society and be done with it.

While I don't sympathize with those who are prosecuted for sex offenses, they are no more harmful to society than those who kill. The fact that you don't care the form of what happens or the law that is broken says you are disgustingly biased.

People as blind as you are usually not in positions of power where they can effect large quantities of people in the US. And for that I am glad.

Regardless of whether or not you think they are scum, they still have rights once their debt to society has been paid. If you have issue with the debt to society you should be a proponent for harsher punishment. Once they are back in part of society if allowed, they should have the same rights as you.

Any cases where you could argue that society is at risk is a fault of the rehabilitation of the convict, nothing more.

Actually most of the people on the lists are like your classmate victims of BS laws and guilty of nothing more than: being a teen who had sex with another teen, dating/marrying a sociopath (false rape/abuse accusations), having sex with a woman who cries rape after the beer goggles wear off, taking a naked baby picture, peeing in an alley, flashing/mooning someone, or hiring a hooker.

The situation is fubar enough that opposition to the registries is rising among peace officers and police whose job is to monitor predators because the system is so swamped in noise that actual threats are buried in the haystack and most of their time is wasted keeping an eye on harmless persons.

The laws as written should be repealed and everyone who had advocated them in their current form be tried, convicted, and immediately hung via a hoisted rope (vs a neck snapping drop) outside the courthouse for crimes against humanity.

You forgot everyone's favorite group of RSOs, underage teen sexters, aka Child Pornographers.

I don't disagree with you, I am just saying that the problem with tightening things up more is that there are so many vague laws that are sending people to jail and flagging them as sexual predators when they aren't. That it would be more destructive then not to force issues like this. Now If by some chance there was national legislation that mandated a clear set of rules and guidelines of what a sexual predator actually is that eliminated people abusing the system. Then sure stick it to them.

Beyond the last part, This...

DId you know that in AZ you can be required to register as a sex offender for getting cited for public urination?

Man, I didn't realize all those guys behind the night club were sex offenders....

Well, maybe a few of them....

Come to think of it, that's why I don't go to night clubs anymore...

One more thing.

This is all just BS publicity stunt crap made to appease the soccer mom demographic.

Like these guys are going to fess up to all their online identities...

They've hired convicted sex offenders to teach jr. high school where I live and nobody finds
out till somebody gets molested.

I THINK I SPOTTED A SEX OFFENDER

Do we need to adjust the age of when you become an adult?

What should be the new age to be an "adult"?

Is the problem that law enforcement / justice system it swapped with to many cases?

Are laws out of touch with modern day / what is seen as right and wrong?

Why is it that "sex offenders" are targeted by other criminals when in jail?

With kids exposed to more adult situations at an earlier age does that prepare them to be adults sooner?

Guess all of this could fall under the age for drinking, driving, voting, military service, media ratings.
